Mario Balotelli has been warned that he must 'mature' before being recalled to the Italian national side.

City striker has to prove that he is worthy of international recall

Mario Balotelli has been warned that he must 'mature' before being recalled to the Italian national side. The Manchester City striker was unceremoniously dropped by his country for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia. He paid the price for having breached the team's code of conduct while turning out for his domestic employers. A reckless red card against Dynamo Kiev in a Europa League clash was deemed to be the final straw for a player who has made a habit of causing a stir. Balotelli will also play no part in Italy's friendly date with Ukraine in Kiev on Tuesday, denying him the chance to add to his two senior caps. The 20-year-old has now been informed that further opportunities in the future will continue to be limited if he does not change his ways.

Focus

Italy Football Federation president Giancarlo Abete said: "Balotelli still has problems and lacks continuity. "He needs to mature and that has to be a personal choice. "We hope he grows and that the focus is placed on his technical ability. "He is a great champion of Italian football and will return to be part of the national team." National coach Cesare Prandelli has also called on Balotelli to raise his game and prove that he is worthy of a regular role with the Azzurri.
Behaviour
He said: "He has extraordinary talent but has to be consistent with his performances. If that is the case, he will be taken into consideration. "Everyone is responsible for their own behaviour. Balotelli has to understand that with this type of behaviour, he is only hurting himself." Prandelli admits he came close to recalling Balotelli for a midweek meeting with Ukraine, but hopes a break will do the youngster good. "I considered calling him after the game against Slovenia but then I thought it was best not to because this group has responded well," he said. "I want responsible players in my national team. "The external episodes that surround Balotelli are annoying but this has happened in the past with other players so this is nothing new."
