Midfielder released from squad following head injury

Alberto Aquilani will play no part in Tuesday's friendly against Republic of Ireland after taking a knock to his head. The midfielder started Italy's Euro 2012 qualifier at home to Estonia on Friday but had to be replaced after just 24 minutes. He took a heavy blow to the head and is understood to have been taken to hospital in Modena after the game, before being released after a brief observation. The injury is not thought to be serious but Italy have decided to release Aquilani from their squad ahead of the upcoming midweek match. Italy will be looking to build on a 3-0 victory over Estonia when they take on Giovanni Trapattoni's men and finish their season in style.
