Zizou thrilled with response
Zinedine Zidane believes Les Bleus went some way to silencing their critics.
France playmaker Zinedine Zidane believes Les Bleus went some way to silencing their critics with their win over Spain on Tuesday.Zidane scored France's final goal in a 3-1 win in Hannover, the victory setting up an intriguing clash with Brazil in the quarter finals.
France came in for stiff criticism for some laboured efforts in the group stages, but the win over Spain suggests they could be about to hit form.
Zidane, who will be retiring after the tournament, was happy with the way the players responded to the adverse press coverage.
"It was a celebration today," said the 34-year-old. "The Spanish made it very difficult for us. The adventure continues. We were very well prepared for this match.
"We wanted to accomplish something and show the people that we had the qualities even if in the group stage there were difficult matches."
Zidane has fond memories of playing Brazil, having scored two goals in the World Cup final win of 1998, but he is aware of the threat carried by the Samba stars.
"That (1998) is a memory for the French people," added Zidane. "But this quarter final has to be played. We'll be prepared for it. We're all very happy to be in it."
France coach Raymond Domenech feels his players put their greater experience to good use against Spain.
Spain have a side full of youthful exuberance, but they were undone by an ageing France outfit.
"It was very tough for the players," said Domenech. "It was a remarkable match in every way. We may have a team of old men but we know how to be patient. Younger people run out of breath.
"There's something exceptional waiting for us, unique emotions."
