Women's World Cup: Meet the England team still flying the flag in Canada
Sunday 28 June 2015 17:28, UK
England are making history at the Women's World Cup, where they've reached their first-ever semi-final.
Mark Sampson's squad saw off hosts Canada on Saturday night to book a final four spot and keep their dreams of winning the World Cup alive.
From a bank analyst to a 'keeper with a knack for a rabona, we profile England's Women's World Cup team...
GOALKEEPERS
Karen Bardsley
Age: 30 Caps: 46 Club: Manchester City
Bardsley was born and raised in California to English parents, but her allegiance to the Lionesses has never been in doubt and she played a crucial role in England’s win against Norway.
Siobhan Chamberlain
Age: 31 Caps: 33 Club: Arsenal
Chamberlain has had an injury-hit season for Arsenal ladies but she can give Erik Lamela a run for his money when it comes to 'rabona' kicks. When she was challenged to do a one-leg-around-the-other trick in April, it took her just one attempt to hit the back of the net.
Carly Telford
Age: 27 Caps: 5 Club: Notts County
Telford first went in goal after turning up to a trial in a Sunderland goalkeeper's top bought by her mother. She is the only player in the 23-woman squad not to have featured so far as boss Mark Sampson has lived up to his 'tinkerman' reputation.
DEFENDERS
Alex Greenwood
Age: 21 Caps: 13 Club: Notts County
Greenwood joined Everton as an eight-year-old but she ended her association with the club last January and hasn’t looked back since. Her flexibility to play in a number of defensive positions is a huge bonus and she was pivotal off the bench against Mexico, setting up Karen Carney's winner.
Steph Houghton
Age: 27 Caps: 56 Club: Manchester City
Houghton's £65,000-a-year may pale in comparison to the £2m USA's Alex Morgan takes home but it makes her one of England's top earners. Houghton sparked England’s revival against Norway with a powerful header - and she also was the first woman to appear on the cover of Shoot magazine.
Claire Rafferty
Age: 26 Caps: 12 Club: Chelsea
England made a shrewd investment picking Rafferty. She may play for Chelsea, but she is also an analyst for Deutsche Bank.
Lucy Bronze
Age: 23 Caps: 19 Club: Manchester City
She is England’s new hero after netting winners against Norway and Canada - but she only made her first appearance at Wembley with the Lionesses in November.
Laura Bassett
Age: 31 Caps: 52 Club: Notts County
She brings plenty of experience to the England dressing room and uses it to her advantage too. Bassett has developed a reputation for being the team’s quiz-master in the dressing room.
Alex Scott
Age: 30 Caps: 124 Club: Arsenal
She is a crucial member of the England defence but also has another important function to perform. Scott is recognised as the team’s DJ and organises the music in the dressing room to inspire the Lionesses ahead of kick-off. Beyonce and Mary J Blige are usually on her playlist...
Casey Stoney
Age: 32 Caps: 118 Goals: 6 Club: Arsenal
Stoney was named in the PFA team of the year and England may need to call upon her expertise. She is also one of football’s few openly gay footballers and is in a relationship with her former Lincoln team-mate Megan Harris.
MIDFIELDERS
Jordan Nobbs
Age: 22 Caps: 21 Goals: 3 Club: Arsenal
She is the daughter of former Hartlepool player Keith Nobbs, but she has developed a reputation in her own right as a midfielder that can make things happen.
Jill Scott
Age: 28 Caps: 93 Club: Manchester City
It was a straight choice between being a long-distance runner or a footballer in her teenage years. She made the right decision and the City midfielder is currently at the peak of her powers.
Fara Williams
Age: 31 Caps: 142 Club: Liverpool
Williams was homeless for six years while playing for England. None of her team-mates knew and she kept it a secret from everyone. She remains vital to England, setting up Houghton’s equaliser against Norway.
Katie Chapman
Age: 32 Caps: 87 Club: Chelsea
Chapman is back in the England fold after a four-year absence and her gritty style of play makes her a perfect candidate for the holding role.
Jo Potter
Age: 30 Caps: 19 Club: Birmingham City
There is often the complaint that there are not female coaches. Step up Jo Potter. She is an FA skills coach and she has a rather useful left foot too.
Karen Carney
Age: 27 Caps: 105 Club: Birmingham City
She is a hall of famer, you know? Well, Birmingham have inducted her in theirs. She has the ability to change matches, too, just like Kelly Smith used to.
Jade Moore
Age: 24 Caps: 19 Club: Birmingham City
She has an infectious work rate and an abundance of pace - and owns a sports therapy business off the pitch.
FORWARDS
Jodie Taylor
Age: 28 Caps: 9 Club: Portland Thorns
Taylor has plied her trade in America, Australia and Sweden but made a vital contribution on Canadian soil when she struck the opener against the hosts in the quarter-final, before giving a emotional interview on TV after the final whistle.
Lianne Sanderson
Age: 27 Caps: 15 Club: Arsenal
She quit playing for England in 2010 but has returned to the fold under Sampson, who has shown faith in her undoubted ability. She is also known for her hair: a platinum mohawk.
Eni Aluko
Age: 28 Caps: 92 Club: Chelsea
Aluko has put her career as a lawyer on hold to play football at the World Cup. She even intends to represent the players when she hangs up her boots.
Fran Kirby
Age: 21 Caps: 11 Club: Reading
Kirby quit playing football four years ago after suffering from depression following the death of her mother. She's back now, though, and grabbed a goal against Mexico. Mark Sampson has hailed her as the ‘mini Messi’ of Women’s football.
Toni Duggan
Age: 23 Caps: 28 Club: Manchester City
The City star may have grabbed the wrong headlines after posting a photo on social media with Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal but plenty will be starstruck by her ability. Her goal against Chelsea in October 2014 was sublime. Oh, and she used to be a Morris dancer.
Ellen White
Age: 25 Caps: 50 Club: Notts County
White has been an important player for Notts County but the striker’s claim to fame is the goal she scored from a free-kick routine against Arsenal which became an internet sensation last season.
