Martin's starting stat

I was at Manchester City v Tottenham on Sunday where I saw City concede their first Premier League penalty since 41 games ago, when Santi Cazorla scored in a 2-0 win for Arsenal.

Spurs ended a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats at the Etihad and won their fifth consecutive Premier League game, while City suffered back-to-back home Premier League defeats for the first time since November-December 2008, when they lost to Manchester United and Everton.

Vincent Kompany's super stat ended. He made his ninth Premier League start of the season and in the previous eight, City had conceded just one goal (Cameron Jerome for Norwich) and had not lost.

Kevin Wimmer had not been on the field when Spurs had last conceded a Premier League goal - a run which lasted 269 minutes before Kelechi Iheanacho ended it.

Harry Kane's penalty made it nine goals in his last nine Premier League away games. He has scored seven of eight penalties in his career. The only one he failed to score from - against West Ham - he made amends by scoring from the rebound.

And finally, Christian Eriksen scored on his 24th birthday, Danny Rose blossomed on Valentine's Day and Joe's Hart was broken!

High fives

How many times have Aston Villa been beaten by five or more goals in the past five seasons and how does that compare to other teams? Paul, Birmingham

MARTIN SAYS: Villa's 6-0 defeat by Liverpool on Sunday did not make pretty viewing for the Villa Park crowd after what has been a torrid season so far.

Although their ever-present Premier League status means many supporters have not seen them relegated, the feeling of being on the receiving end of a hiding is all too familiar.

Since the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Villa have lost by five or more goals five times, more than any other club.

Before Sunday's defeat, they had been convincingly seen off by Southampton 6-1 (May 2015), Arsenal 5-0 (February 2015), Chelsea 8-0 (December 2012) and Manchester City 5-0 (November 2012).

Since August 2011, Newcastle, Norwich and QPR have the second-most five-goal deficits in the Premier League with four, while Fulham have lost three times by that margin.

Joy of six

Liverpool had six different goalscorers as they beat Villa 6-0… has that ever happened before? Dominic, Merseyside

Nathaniel Clyne of Liverpool

MARTIN SAYS: Jurgen Klopp expressed his satisfaction at having six different players on the scoresheet during the win at Villa, the first time that has happened in a Premier League game since 2012.

And for the Claret and Blue faithful, it was yet another familiar sight. The only side to have more than six different goalscorers in a single Premier League match were Chelsea, who registered seven as they beat Villa 8-0 on December 23, 2012.

The Blues were given an early Christmas present at Stamford Bridge under Rafa Benitez, with Fernando Torres, David Luiz, Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Ramires (2), Oscar and Eden Hazard netting.

Liverpool's win on Sunday marked the seventh time six different goalscorers have scored for one side after Arsenal 6-2 Blackburn (2009), Manchester City 6-0 Portsmouth (2008), Arsenal 7-0 Everton (2005), Blackburn 7-1 West Ham (2001), Leeds 6-1 Bradford (2001), and finally some joy for Villa fans…

Six different Villa men - Ashley Young, John Carew, Stiliyan Petrov, Gareth Barry, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Marlon Harewood - scored as they saw off Derby 6-0 in April 2008.

This subject always jogs my memory of the Tottenham 4-5 Arsenal game in November 2004 - when there were nine different scorers on the field!

Shots to nothing

Everton had 34 shots on goal against West Brom on Saturday, and still lost the game. Has that happened in Premier League history? Elliott, London

MARTIN SAYS: Well, first of all, the team over at Opta have taken away one of Everton's efforts to leave them on 33, but it still ranks them second in Opta's list of the most shots taken without taking a single point from a game.

West Brom scored with their only shot on target at Goodison Park, while Everton hit the woodwork twice on an agonising afternoon for Roberto Martinez and Co.

But Arsenal's 35 shots on goal against West Ham at the Emirates in April 2007 tops the list, which begins at the 2006/07 mark when Opta extended their coverage to include shots, going down 1-0 to Bobby Zamora's first-half winner on the way to the Hammers' great escape from the drop.

Everton's barrage on the West Brom goal brought back memories of Manchester City's 33 shots against the Toffees in December 2010, when David Moyes' side stole a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium with 10 men.

Newcastle hit 32 efforts in November 2012 against Swansea but went down 2-1 at St James' Park, while Chelsea did the same against Birmingham in November 2010 at St Andrew's, losing 1-0 to Lee Bowyer's strike.

It's so often about the quality of the shots rather than the quantity!

More shots to nothing

Who has the least shots on target per game in the Premier League this season?

Image: West Brom have had just 77 shots on target this season

MARTIN SAYS: The West Midlands' two Premier League sides haven't given their fans much joy in front of goal this season, registering just 159 shots on target between them.

West Brom average the lowest shots on target per game, despite sitting relatively clear of danger in 14th place, eight points away from the drop zone. Their total of 77 is at a rate of just 2.96 per game,

In fact, in the Baggies' last five Premier League games they have failed to hit the target on three occasions, against Aston Villa (0-0), Newcastle (0-1) and Southampton (0-3).

Aston Villa are second-bottom, registering 3.15 shots on target per game, followed by Stoke (3.38), Watford (3.46) and Sunderland (4.46).

Tottenham are in the hunt for a first league title since 1961, and have had the most shots on target per game with 6.54, well ahead of Manchester City (5.81), Arsenal (5.58) and Liverpool (4.85).

Louis van Gaal's Manchester United sit 12th, with their 99 shots on target at a rate of 3.81 per game.
