There's relief all round for struggling Burnley and West Ham in Chris Kamara's Picks of the Weekend...
Chris Kamara's Picks of the Premier League weekend
Every Saturday afternoon, Chris Kamara heads to stadiums up and down the country to deliver his unique match reports for Soccer Saturday. On Sundays you can see him back in the Sky Sports studios as he brings you all of the highlights on Goals on Sunday. And then on Mondays you can find Kammy right here on skysports.com as he brings you his picks of the weekend. Join us every week as he runs through his highs and lows as well as answering YOUR questions... GAME - Hull City 1-4 Burnley
It was always going to be a huge game at the bottom of the table and a huge result for either side. For Burnley to get beat by six at home and bounce back was incredible and although they still have a lot to do, they are in their fighting and anything can happen. A draw and you'd have probably said both sides were down, but this gives them a chance. As for Hull, I said on these pages a few weeks back that Adam Pearson made a big decision to bring in Iain Dowie and has to live or die by that. You do wonder what this result will do to them.
TEAM - Burnley
West Ham's was a great win and Manchester City are still flying high scoring for fun but what a performance from Brian Laws' men. Defeat could've sealed their fate but it is testimony to those players and the manager that they have given themselves a little hope. After that drubbing by City there was no moping about, although perhaps Kevin Kilbane's early goal was actually a God-send because it meant they had to throw caution to the wind. But to get your first away win, score four and beat one of your main rivals is a magnificent performance.
PLAYER - Graham Alexander
There might have been nothing spectacular about his two penalties, but he won't take many more important ones. The first one, when the game in the balance, in particular was a real pressure kick - and how many times have you seen players miss their second spot-kick of the game? Not Alexander! At 38 he is an example that you don't have to use your legs and your brain and passion for the game can get you through. When he has to deliver for Burnley, he usually does.
GOAL - Ilan v Sunderland
It will probably be the goal that keeps West Ham in the Premier League, which says it all really. It was not the sort of goal you would associate with them or Gianfranco Zola either; a long punt, a flick-on from Carlton Cole and fair play to the Brazilian, he read it and got the vital touch. That, plus his goal against Everton last week, have made him the Hammers' hero - and an unlikely one at that, because until now he'd shown us nothing at all!
GAFFER - Brian Laws
It was always going to be difficult for Brian going in there because it's not easy to replace someone who had done as well as Owen Coyle. Brian is an honest guy and if you asked him he would admit they have not got as many points as he'd have wanted by now, but Saturday's performance will go some way to easing that pain. He wears his heart on his sleeve and will have been hurt by that performance but the look of relief on his face when he was celebrating that second goal said it all. It would have been hard for him to come back had they lost that game but he deserves to fight a little longer.
GRIPE - Double trouble
I did feel a bit sorry for Aston Villa and Martin O'Neill - and not for the first time at Wembley this season. For a start, Nemanja Vidci should've been sent off against them in the Carling Cup and now John Terry doesn't go for an awful tackle on James Milner and Villa don't get a penalty for a blatant, blatant foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor. Quite why things have conspired against them in big games is hard to understand and must be even harder for O'Neill to take. I also think Steve Bruce had a point when he pointed out that his Sunderland side weren't allowed to take a free-kick because the West Ham players were celebrating a goal that never was. It was not deliberate time-wasting perhaps, but ate up valuable seconds nonetheless and I do think Sunderland should have been able to restart as soon as they wanted - after all they were only in their penalty box. I seem to remember it happening in a game between Bolton and Arsenal (I think) a few years ago, when Arsenal broke down the other end and scored, so why weren't Sunderland allowed to do the same.
Kammy answers your questions...
Do you want Chris Kamara to answer YOUR question? Email him at skysportsclub@bskyb.com or use the feedback form at the bottom of the page. BERBAT-OFF?Chris, I don't want to sound wise after the event, but I didn't fancy Dimitar Berbatov as a United player the moment they signed him? To me he looks lazy and as if he doesn't really want to play for the shirt - something which you can't really say about even those with less skill than him. Do you think Fergie made a mistake there and will he ship him out at the end of the season? Mark Easton
KAMMY SAYS: I've got to say Mark, I am as flabbergasted as anybody as to why Berbatov has been so disappointing this season. Unfortunately for United they've lost Wayne Rooney and because of that, seem to have lost everything. It's a real shame Berbatov hasn't been able to step up to the plate because he has had opportunities - in terms of playing time and chances in front of goal. But for whatever reason, he just hasn't taken those chances. People say he was great at Spurs because he was the main man, but I don't think his loss of form is that simple; you have to fit into a team no matter how important you are and eventually he will fit into United, I think. I can see your point about next season and maybe United will want to cut their losses but if you look at it, who is going to come in for him. There are not many clubs that can come and nick players from Old Trafford and on his displays this season, those clubs are hardly going to be knocking down the door to sign him, are they?
PLAY UP POMPEY!Kammy, I know this is strictly a Premier League blog, but as an old Pompey boy I just had to ask you what you made of the semi-final on Sunday? The day after we get relegated, to go and beat Spurs was beyond even my wildest dreams... but fair play to the boys, they went and did the impossible! You have seen a lot of 'unbelievable' things in your time, but what about that, eh mate? Phil Witten
KAMMY SAYS: I've said it before and I'll say it once again, just for Portsmouth... UNBELIEVABLE! I've got to say Phil, like most people I gave them absolutely no chance before the game. When you look at what's gone on at that club this season, the fact that they were relegated 24 hours earlier and that Avram Grant could barely get a side together because of injuries and one thing or another. But put a team together he did and what a job they pulled off when really, I just thought Sunday was all about those fans getting their last trip to Wembley for a long time. Fair play to Avram as well, because he set them up superbly and although they rode their luck at times, if anyone deserves a little bit of good fortune after what they've been through, it's Avram, his players and their supporters. Maybe though, their name was well, not written on the trophy, but at least the final. It was a fantastic performance and I hope Pompey fans have another memorable day out in May.
