I saw QPR beat Chelsea at the weekend and people tend forget there were times when Rangers were stronger than their near neighbours. At the start of the Premier League, for example, they finished as the top London club under Gerry Francis. The overall head-to-head record shows there isn't much between them as of 41 meetings, Chelsea have won 14, QPR have won 12 and there have been 15 draws. Chelsea have now only won one of their last 12 visits to QPR in the league, drawing five and losing six. The one win was their previous visit - a 2-1 success in January 1996. Chelsea still need one goal to reach a landmark 6,000 football league goals and would be the 31st club to achieve that feat - and only the third from London following Arsenal and Tottenham. The top all-time league scorers are Man Utd (7434), Wolves (7299), Liverpool (7272), Aston Villa (7194), Arsenal (7130), Man City (7010). This was Chelsea's first defeat in their last 64 Premier League games against clubs promoted the previous season. They have won 54 and drawn nine against newly-promoted teams in that time and their last defeat was 1-0 at home to Charlton in April 2001. Didier Drogba overtook Gianfranco Zola as the overseas outfield player with the most appearances for Chelsea, but sadly his 313th game only lasted 41 minutes before his red card. Goalkeeper Petr Cech made his 324th appearance against QPR and remains the overseas player with the most appearances for the club. From QPR's point of view, this was their first home win since April 4 when they beat Sheffield United and their first home win in nine in all competitions. In terms of their Premier league, it was their first home win since April 1996 when they beat West Ham and it was only their second win in their last 12 Premier League London derbies.CHAMPS HIT FOR SIX
Dear Martin. I heard Manchester United have let in six goals at Old Trafford in the past, but they were not the champions of England at the time. Can you tell me this: was Sunday the first time that the defending champions have let in six goals (or more) at home? Vic Archer MARTIN SAYS: You're right. Manchester United have indeed conceded six at home before (as has been widely reported, the last time they did so was a 4-7 loss to Newcastle in 1930), but never as champions. However, they are not the first defending champions to concede six at home. This has happened three times previously, although all of the other occasions came before the Second World War. Ironically, the last team to suffer this fate was Manchester City, whose title winners lost 6-1 at home to Middlesbrough on March 9, 1938. They went on to be relegated that season. The other two occasions also involved the Manchester clubs, but this time as the team scoring six at the home of the champions. Back in 1928, Man City won 6-2 at champions Everton and in 1907 Manchester United won 6-1 at Newcastle. Defending champions conceding six at home: 12/10/1907: Newcastle 1-6 Man Utd
15/09/1928: Everton 2-6 Man City
09/03/1938: Man City 1-6 Middlesbrough
23/10/2011: Man Utd 1-6 Man City
CITY'S SIX MACHINES
Martin. I hope you're going to give Man City plenty of coverage this week. I'd like to know how many times we've scored six goals in a league game away from home because it seems to happen surprisingly often. I can remember us scoring six against Man United, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley twice in the last few years. Does anyone have a better record than us of scoring six on opposition grounds? Martin Keane MARTIN SAYS: Thanks to Opta I can tell you that this was the 11th time that Manchester City have scored six goals or more away from home in a league game: 21/03/1904: Wolves 1-6 Man City (Division 1)
23/01/1926: Man Utd 1-6 Man City (Division 1)
15/09/1928: Everton 2-6 Man City (Division 1)
26/10/1929: Liverpool 1-6 Man City (Division 1)
03/04/1937: Brentford 2-6 Man City (Division 1)
29/01/1938: Derby 1-7 Man City (Division 1)
26/12/1938: Tranmere 3-9 Man City (Division 2)
09/03/1999: Burnley 0-6 Man City (Division 3)
22/09/2001: Sheff Wed 2-6 Man City (Division 2)
03/04/2010: Burnley 1-6 Man City (Division 1)
23/10/2011: Man Utd 1-6 Man City (Division 1) As you say, they have scored six or more away on four occasions since 1998/99, which is more than any other side in England's top four tiers during that spell. Arsenal, Manchester United and Rotherham have all managed it three times. Personally, my most abiding memory of a high-scoring Manchester City game was a home win at Maine Road. I commentated on their 10-1 win over Huddersfield as three players scored hat-tricks - David White, Paul Stewart and Paul Adcock. You'll notice they scored lots of goals in 1937 and 1938. Their records in 1936/37 and 1937/38, the seasons when they won the title and were relegated, are worth looking at: 1936/37: P42 W22 D13 L7 F107 A61
1937/38: P42 W14 D8 L20 F80 A77
THEATRE OF DREAM RESULTS
Dear Martin. Man City's win over Man United got me thinking about other teams that have won there and gone on to win the Premier League. I remember Chelsea did it a couple of seasons ago and Arsenal won the title there once. My question is this: Have all the teams that have won the Premier League won at Old Trafford along the way? Mark Foster. MARTIN SAYS: Four of the seven teams to have beaten Manchester United to the Premier League title did so having won at Old Trafford along the way. Chelsea won 2-1 there in 2009/10 and 3-1 there in 2004/05. Also Arsenal won 1-0 at Old Trafford on the way to their title triumphs in 2002 and 1998. I was at all of them Of the other title winners, Chelsea's class of 2006 lost 1-0 at Old Trafford, but did win 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on the way to the title. The Arsenal title-winning team of 2004 drew both of their league fixtures against Manchester United, but the first must have felt like a win after Ruud van Nistelrooy's infamous late penalty miss. The Blackburn team of 1994/95 are the only side to lose both league fixtures against Manchester United and still go on to win the title. Results of Premier League champions against Manchester United: 2009/10:
08/11/2009: Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd
03/04/2010: Man Utd 1-2 Chelsea 2005/06:
06/11/2005: Man Utd 1-0 Chelsea
29/04/2006: Chelsea 3-0 Man Utd 2004/05:
15/08/2004: Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd
10/05/2005: Man Utd 1-3 Chelsea 2003/04:
21/09/2003: Man Utd 0-0 Arsenal
28/04/2004: Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd 2001/02:
25/11/2001: Arsenal 3-1 Man Utd
08/05/2002: Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal 1997/98:
09/11/1997: Arsenal 3-2 Man Utd
14/03/1998: Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal 1994/95:
23/10/1994: Blackburn 2-4 Man Utd
22/01/1995: Man Utd 1-0 Blackburn
SEVENTH HEAVEN
Dear Martin. How many times has there been seven goals in the Manchester derby? I can't imagine it's ever happened before? Max (Manchester City) MARTIN SAYS: There has never been more than seven goals in a Manchester derby, but we have seen seven goals on five occasions throughout history. You don't have to go back very far for the previous instance, which was September 2009 at Old Trafford when Michael Owen's late goal gave United a 4-3 win over City. Before that you had to look back to a 4-3 win for United at Maine Road in 1971. Surprisingly, this is not the first time that Manchester City have won 6-1 at Old Trafford, as they did so in January 1926. Furthermore, the very first meeting of these sides back in November 1894 also witnessed seven goals - with Manchester United winning a Division 2 clash 5-2 at Hyde Road. Seven goals in a Manchester derby: 23/10/2011: Man Utd 1-6 Man City (Premier League)
20/09/2009: Man Utd 4-3 Man City (Premier League)
04/04/1971: Man City 3-4 Man Utd (Division 1)
23/01/1926: Man Utd 1-6 Man City (Division 1)
03/11/1894: Man City 2-5 Man Utd (Division 2)
NINE LIVES
Dear Martin. This weekend Chelsea were two men down in the second half, but almost scored against QPR. This got me thinking, how many times did a team with nine men score a goal against eleven in the Premier League? I remember that West Bromwich achieved this against Blackpool last season, but I cannot recall any other occasion. Thank you for your help! Andras Szabo (Newcastle United Fan) MARTIN SAYS: Six teams have scored a Premier League goal after having two men sent off. The instances were as follows: EVERTON v Queens Park Rangers, December 1992 Everton managed to score twice at Loftus Road in 1992, despite playing the whole of the second half with just nine men. Neville Southall and Paul Rideout were sent off before the break, but Stuart Barlow scored twice as the Toffees battled back from 3-0 down before eventually losing 4-2. BARNSLEY v Liverpool, March 1998 On March 28, 1998 Barnsley were losing 2-1 at home to Liverpool when Chris Morgan was sent off in the 65th minute, shortly after Darren Barnard had also received his marching orders. However, they went on to equalise through a Neil Redfearn penalty in the 85minute. Unfortunately for them, Steve McManaman netted an injury-time winner for Liverpool and Darren Shreidan became the third Tykes player to be sent off in the game. MIDDLESBROUGH v Southampton, November 1998 On November 7, 1998 Middlesbrough managed to draw with Southampton at The Dell after going down to nine men. Robbie Mustoe was sent off in the 62nd minute and Phil Stamp was dismissed in the 87th with his side 3-2 down, but a strike from Gianluca Festa in injury time rescued a point. BOLTON v Leicester, December 2001 On December 29, 2001 Bolton were two goals down and two men down after just 27 minutes. Paul Warhurst and Dean Holdsworth were sent off for the home side, but Kevin Nolan scored in the 34th minute and Michael Ricketts scored a 90th-minute equaliser, having earlier scored an own goal. Leicester also saw Muzzy Izzett sent off in the 69th minute. CHELSEA v Man City, February 2010 They couldn't manage it on Sunday, but Chelsea have scored a goal with just nine men on the field. At Stamford Bridge on February 27, 2010 they had both Juliano Belletti and Michael Ballack sent off against Man City, but Frank Lampard scored a consolation penalty in the 90th minute of a game they lost 4-2. WEST BROM v Blackpool, November 2010 As you mentioned, West Brom achieved the feat last season. They had Pablo Ibanez and Gonzalo Jara sent off before 30 minutes had been played, yet Youssuf Mulumbu still managed to bag an 85th-minute consolation in a 2-1 defeat.
WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT?
Hello Martin. As a slightly frustrated Liverpool fan it seems that we have hit the woodwork an awful lot this year. Do you know whether I am right in thinking Liverpool have hit the woodwork the most in the Premier League this season, or is my natural bias making me assume that Liverpool are more 'unlucky' than other teams?! Thanks - Dan, Liverpool fan MARTIN SAYS: Dan, the stats do support your theory. Liverpool have hit the woodwork on nine occasions in the Premier League so far this term, which is an average of once per game. Opta have given us the stats on how often each team has hit the post or bar and Liverpool are three clear of their nearest rivals, Manchester City, who've done it six times. In fact, 14 of the 20 teams have hit the woodwork on three occasions or fewer - which is as many times as the Reds struck the woodwork in Saturday's game with Norwich alone. Most woodwork hits in the Premier League 2011/12 NINE: Liverpool
SIX: Man City
FIVE: Fulham
FOUR: Blackburn, QPR, Stoke, Wigan
THREE: Chelsea, Everton, Man Utd, Newcastle, Norwich, Sunderland, Swansea, Wolves
TWO: Arsenal, Bolton, Tottenham, West Brom
ONE: Aston Villa
