Tyler's Starting Stat - Spurs' White Hart pain... again

Tottenham's record in the Premier League against Manchester United now reads P40 W3 D8 L29. They've now picked up wins against Sir Alex Ferguson's side in their last 22 Premier League games and 26 in all competitions since May 19, 2001 when they won 3-1; a game in which Paul Scholes - who is still going strong the best part of 11 years later - scored. Wayne Rooney made it five goals in his last three Premier League appearances and scored Man United's 13th headed league goal this season, second only to Norwich with 14. However, Spurs still only have two headed goals this term: Younes Kaboul in August and Gareth Bale in September. The game marked Spurs' first home defeat in 13 in the Premier League, the last coming against Man City in August. Ashley Young scored two goals and his only previous goal against Spurs was also in a win at White Hart Lane on a Monday Night Football in September 2008 for Aston Villa. Interestingly, Jermain Defoe's last 11 Premier League goals have all come in the last 30 minutes of matches, partly through being a substitute! Also, there were a couple of couple of landmarks: Jonny Evans played in his 150th club career match, while Rio Ferdinand played in his 450th league game.

THREE AND OUT
Dear Martin. Arsenal have just won a game by three goals and been knocked out of the Champions League. Can you tell me if this has ever happened before in the Champions League knock-out stages? I heard it has happened with Milan in the past, but has it happened to anyone else? Zach (Arsenal fan)
MARTIN SAYS: According to our friends at Opta, the only other occasion this has happened also involved Milan, when they beat Deportivo La Coruna 4-1 in the first leg of the 2004 quarter-finals, before going out courtesy of a 4-0 second leg defeat in Spain. No other side has won a Champions League knock-out game - either the first or the second leg - by three goals and gone out.

THREE IN THREE
Dear Martin. Pavel Pogrebnyak has just scored a hat-trick in only his third Premier League game. Has any player scored a hat-trick in fewer games than this? I can't imagine there could be many. Simon Johns (Fulham fan)
MARTIN SAYS: As you say, Fulham's new striker scored a hat-trick in his third game, but we have seen Premier League players net trebles in fewer games than that. The most famous is Fabrizio Ravanelli, who scored three on his Premier League debut for Middlesbrough against Liverpool on the opening day of the 1996/97 season. He remains the only player to have scored a hat-trick on his Premier League debut. The other name to mention is that of Clive Mendonca, who scored a hat-trick in his second Premier League appearance. The striker scored three for Charlton in a 5-0 win over Southampton in August 1998. Some record books also credit Egil Ostenstad with a hat-trick for Southampton in his third Premier League game; a 6-3 victory over Manchester United. However, the last goal has been credited as an own goal by the Premier League dubious goals panel. In recent times we have seen Leon Best of Newcastle and Sergio Aguero of Man City score hat-tricks in their fourth Premier League game, so Pogrebnyak has gone one better than those players. Players to have scored their first Premier League hat-trick within six games: ONE GAME
17/08/1996: Fabrizio Ravanelli (Middlesbrough) TWO GAMES
22/08/1998: Clive Mendonca (Charlton) THREE GAMES
04/03/2012: Pavel Pogrebnyak (Fulham) FOUR GAMES
07/05/2003: Jermaine Pennant (Arsenal)
25/08/1992: Eric Cantona (Leeds)*
05/01/2011: Leon Best (Newcastle)
10/09/2011: Sergio Aguero (Man City) FIVE GAMES
30/10/1993: Robbie Fowler (Liverpool)
11/02/1995: Tommy Johnson (Aston Villa)
31/10/2009: Aruna Dindane (Portsmouth) SIX GAMES
26/10/2008: Robinho (Man City) *Cantona had played in First Division before this.

RELIANT ON ROBIN
Dear Martin. I've heard that Robin van Persie has scored almost half of Arsenal's goals in the Premier League and it made me wonder which team is the most reliant on their main goalscorer. I know RVP has scored the most goals, but has he scored a higher percentage of his team's goals than any other player? Conversely, which team is least reliant on their main scorer and shares the goals around? I hope you can help with the stats? Thanks, Kenny Bowe (Arsenal fan)
MARTIN SAYS: Robin van Persie has scored 25 of Arsenal's 55 Premier League goals this season, which equates to 45% of their total. No other team has been so reliant on one player for such a high percentage of their goals. The only other player to have scored more than 40% of their team's league goals this year is Newcastle striker Demba Ba. He has scored 16 of Newcastle's 39 league goals this term, which is 41% of their total haul. Three further players have scored a third of their club's goals single-handedly - Yakubu of Blackburn, Danny Graham of Swansea and Steven Fletcher of Wolves. At the other end of the spectrum, Everton are far from reliant on one individual player. They have scored 27 goals and yet no individual player has managed more than three. As mentioned last week, Victor Anichebe, Leighton Baines, Apostolos Vellios, Leon Osman and now Royston Drenthe all have three to their name. Thanks to Opta, here is a look at the percentage of goals scored by each Premier League club's top scorer:
Top scorer Team Player goals Team goals % by top scorer
Robin van Persie Arsenal 25 55 45%
Demba Ba Newcastle United 16 39 41%
Yakubu Aiyegbeni Blackburn Rovers 13 38 34%
Danny Graham Swansea City 10 30 33%
Steven Fletcher Wolverhampton Wanderers 10 30 33%
Clint Dempsey Fulham 12 37 32%
Darren Bent Aston Villa 9 30 30%
Heidar Helguson Queens Park Rangers 8 28 29%
Wayne Rooney Manchester United 18 66 27%
Peter Odemwingie West Bromwich Albion 9 34 26%
Grant Holt Norwich City 10 38 26%
Peter Crouch Stoke City 7 27 26%
Ivan Klasnic Bolton Wanderers 7 29 24%
Sergio Aguero Manchester City 16 69 23%
Frank Lampard Chelsea 10 47 21%
Emmanuel Adebayor Tottenham Hotspur 11 52 21%
Luis Suarez/Craig Bellamy Liverpool 6 30 20%
Jordi Gomez/Franco Di Santo Wigan Athletic 4 23 17%
Stephane Sessegnon Sunderland 6 35 17%
Victor Anichebe/Leighton Baines/Apostolos Vellios/Leon Osman/Royston Drenthe Everton 3 27 11%

BAD LUCK FOR BLACK CATS
Dear Martin. Shola Ameobi seems to have a knack of scoring in Tyne-Wear derbies and I've lost count of the number of times has scored goals against Sunderland over the years. Can you tell us if any player has scored more Premier League goals against Sunderland than he has? Jim (Sunderland fan)
MARTIN SAYS: Shola Ameobi has now scored an astonishing seven Premier League goals against Sunderland, which accounts for just under a fifth of the 39 goals he has scored in the top flight for Newcastle. He may not have been born in Newcastle, but he;s very much a Newcastle person and has grown up with the rivalry so it clearly brings the best out of him. His goals against them are as follows: 04/03/2012: Equaliser in a 1-1 home draw
31/10/2010: Two goals in a 5-1 home win
01/02/2009: Equaliser in a 101 home draw
25/10/2008: An equaliser in a 2-1 away defeat
23/10/2005: The opening two goals in a 3-2 home win Ameobi is one of four players to have scored seven times against the Black Cats in the Premier League and is in the illustrious company of Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka. However, one player is out in front with eight Premier League goals against Sunderland. That man is Robbie Keane, who has scored against them for Spurs, Leeds and Coventry City. 07/11/2009: Scored in a 2-0 home win for Tottenham
07/03/2009: Scored in a 1-1 away draw for Tottenham
19/01/2008; Scored in a 2-0 home win for Tottenham
12/02/2006: Scored in a 1-1 away draw for Tottenham
03/12/2005: Scored in a 3-2 home win for Tottenham
07/04/2002: Scored in a 2-0 home win for Leeds
12/02/2000: scored in a 3-2 home win for Coventry
19/08/1999: Scored in a 1-1 home draw for Coventry Thanks to Opta, the players with the most Premier League goals against Sunderland are: Robbie Keane (8)
Shola Ameobi, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka (7)
Craig Bellamy (6)
Michael Owen, Emile Heskey, Gus Poyet, Louis Saha, Kevin Nolan, Robin van Persie, Tim Cahill (5)

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS
Dear Martin. Liverpool have drawn eight Premier League games at home this season and were within a whisker of making that nine against Arsenal on Saturday. Can you tell me if they are on course for a record with regards to the number of draws at home in one Premier League season? Terry (Liverpool fan)
MARTIN SAYS: Liverpool have drawn eight of their 13 Premier League games at Anfield this season, which is significantly more than any other side in the top flight: Draws at home in the Premier League this season: EIGHT: Liverpool
SIX: Swansea, Wigan
FIVE: QPR
FOUR: Aston Villa, Fulham, Newcastle, Norwich, Stoke, Sunderland
THREE: Everton
TWO: Arsenal, Bolton, Chelsea, Tottenham, West Brom, Wolves
ONE: Blackburn, Man Utd
ZERO: Man City Kenny Dalglish's side need just two more draws from their remaining six home fixtures to equal the Premier League record of 10 home draws in one season. Five teams have done this previously, although two of them did so in a 42-game season. 10 home draws in one Premier League season: Manchester City (1993/94)*: P21 W6 D10 L5 (finished 16th)
Sheffield United (1993/94)*: P21 W6 D10 L5 (finished 20th)
Sheffield Wednesday (1996/97): P19 W8 D10 L1 (finished 7th)
Leicester City (1997/98): P19 W6 D10 L3 (finished 10th)
Leicester City (2003/04) P19 W3 D10 L6 (finished 18th) *42-game season If we look at the three other teams that finished a 38-game season with 10 home draws, Sheffield Wednesday (1996/97) had seven draws from their first 13 home games, Leicester (1997/98) had seven draws from their first 13 home games, while Leicester (2003/04) had six from their first 13 home games. Liverpool are already on eight, so are well on course to break the record. For the record their remaining home games are against Everton, Wigan, Aston Villa, Fulham, West Brom and Chelsea.

INTERNATIONAL ISSUES
Dear Martin. After coming home from the high-scoring England game against Holland I was wondering which international team has scored the most goals against England in history. Also, I would like to know which side we have scored the most goals against. And how many times have we conceded three at home? Keep up the good work. Graeme (England fan).
MARTIN SAYS: The team that has scored the most goals against England is their old rivals, Scotland. The Scots have scored 169 times against England, but those goals have come in 110 fixtures. The other nations to have scored heavily against England include old adversaries Wales, Northern Ireland, Germany, France and Brazil. Most goals against England in history: 1. Scotland: 169 (110 games)
2. Wales: 90 (101 games)
3. Northern Ireland:* 81 (98 games)
4. Germany:** 38 (28 games)
5. France: 35 (28 games)
6. Brazil: 31 (23 games)
7. Hungary: 30 (22 games)
8. Austria: 27 (18 games)
9. Sweden, Italy: 26 (both 22 games) *Includes the Ireland team that played from 1882 to 1950 ** Includes West Germany Again, the home nations have been on the receiving end of the most goals scored by England players with Northern Ireland (including the old Ireland team), Wales and Scotland at the top of the pile. Beyond them, Belgium are the side that have leaked the most goals against England. Most goals conceded against England in history: 1. Northern Ireland:* 323 (98 games)
2. Wales: 245 (101 games)
3. Scotland: 192 (110 games)
4. Belgium: 69 (20 games)
5. France: 66 (28 games)
6. Austria: 58 (18 games)
7. Hungary: 56 (22 games)
8. Switzerland: 52 (22 games)
9. Germany:** 48 (28 games)
10. Luxembourg: 47 (9 games) *Includes the Ireland team that played from 1882 to 1950 ** Includes West Germany To answer your final question, last Wednesday's game was only the seventh time in the last 40 years that England have conceded three at home and the 16th time since the Second World War.
