Tyler's Starting Stat - A Bridge too far for Spurs

You still have to look back to 1990 for the last Tottenham win at Stamford Bridge; it really is graveyard of a ground for them! They have not won in their last 25 visits in all competitions. On a brighter note, Saturday's 0-0 draw ended a run of eight consecutive defeats for Harry Redknapp as a manager at that ground. Tottenham still haven't won away in the Premier League in 2012, but they did become the first team to stop Chelsea scoring at home in the league since February 2011. Furthermore, Chelsea haven't won a London derby in the Premier League since they beat Spurs 2-1 in April 2011. The booking of Michael Essien was their 60th of the season in just their 30th game, surpassing the 59 they received in the whole of last season. I'm sure Chelsea would like me to point out that this statistic has been accentuated by the flurry of cards they received against QPR on October 23. Petr Cech kept a clean sheet in his 250th Premier League game for Chelsea, while neither Ramires on his 25th birthday nor Benoit Assou-Ekotto on his 28th birthday had sorrows to drown afterwards. They were marking each other and both got something from the game! Finally, the game took place one day before the 23rd anniversary of Redknapp's first managerial visit to Stamford Bridge with Bournemouth in the old Second Division on March 25, 1989. Given his record there, you won't be surprised to hear that he lost that game 2-0. He has now won just three of 16 managerial visits to Chelsea - all in the Premier League with West Ham.

FULL ENGLISH FOR ARSENAL
Martin, I'm an Arsenal supporter and I couldn't help but notice that until the 91st minute of Saturday's game against Villa, both of Arsenal's goals had been scored by English players (Gibbs and Walcott). Obviously Mikel Arteta changed all of that, but it got me thinking, when was the last time all of Arsenal's goals in a game were scored by English players? My guess is it must have been a while. Thanks, Alistair
MARTIN SAYS: Saturday's game was certainly a rarity. According to our friends at Opta, to find the last Premier League game where all of Arsenal's goalscorers were English you have to go back to May 2008 at Sunderland when Theo Walcott scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. If you are looking for the last time Arsenal had two English goalscorers in the same Premier League game you have to go back to October 4, 1997 against Barnsley, when Ray Parlour, David Platt and Ian Wright all scored in a 5-0 home win (Dennis Bergkamp also got a brace). If you want the last time they had more than one English goalscorer and all of the goals were scored by Englishmen then you're looking at their 4-1 win over Bolton at Highbury on September 13, 1997 when an Ian Wright hat-trick and a Ray Parlour goal sealed the win. That was the day Wright broke Cliff Bastin's Arsenal goalscoring record! It was interesting to answer this question on my return from Benfica, who fielded nine South Americans, one Spaniard and one Belgian in their starting XI against Chelsea, while the other three teams playing in the Champions League on Tuesday night all fielded Portuguese players! That fact reminded me of the fuss on Boxing Day 1999 when Chelsea fielded a team without an English player (although Jon Harley came on as a substitute). Current manager Roberto di Matteo was in the team that day!

FEARED FOES
Hi. As a Chelsea fan it seems that Louis Saha always seems to score against us and it was noted during coverage of the Chelsea v Tottenham game that he has scored 10 goals against us. I was wondering is that the most Premier League goals a single player has scored against Chelsea? Many thanks, Charlie
MARTIN SAYS: I must point out here that while Louis Saha has indeed scored 10 times against Chelsea, not all of those goals came in the Premier League. He has scored against them seven times in the league, plus two goals in the FA Cup and one in the Carling Cup. There are two players with more Premier League goals against Chelsea than Saha - Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry - who have each scored eight times against the Blues. Henry has also scored two FA Cup goals against Chelsea, so has matched Saha's record of having 10 strikes against them in the Premier League era. However, Saha has a chance to extend his record against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final next month. We thought you might be interested in seeing which player has scored the most goals against each team in Premier League history, so with the help of Opta here is that list: Arsenal: Robbie Fowler and Wayne Rooney (10)

OFF QUICKLY
Hi Martin, excellent column every week and a must read for me. I believe Djibril Cisse's red card over the weekend was his second red in five games for QPR. My question is this - Is there any other player to have a worse record in his first five games? Thanks. Adrian Sequeira (Manchester Utd fan)
MARTIN SAYS: You're absolutely right, Adrian. QPR's new signing was given his marching orders twice in his first five games for QPR - but amazingly he is not the fastest to two red cards after signing for a Premier League club. We have seen two players receive two red cards within just three games after signing for a Premier League side. They are: TOMAS REPKA - The Czech defender had a difficult start to his career at West Ham after getting sent off in the 80th minute of his Premier League debut, a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough on September 15, 2001. After serving his suspension, he returned to the side for a 3-0 win over Newcastle (a game I commentated on) but was then sent off an hour into his third game for the club - a 7-1 defeat at Blackburn. RICARDO ROCHA - The Portuguese defender joined Portsmouth in February 2010 and was sent off twice before the month had ended. He managed to avoid an early bath on his debut, although he did suffer a 5-0 defeat against Manchester United. He was then sent off just nine minutes into his second Premier League game - a 1-1 draw with Sunderland. After his ban he then returned to the side for the trip to Burnley on February 27 and was sent off again in the final minute. However, Pompey did manage to win that game 3-1. Thanks to Opta here are the players who have reached two red cards in the fewest games for a Premier League club: 2001/02: Tomas Repka (3 games for West Ham)
2009/10: Ricardo Rocha (3 games for Portsmouth)
2011/12: Djibril Cisse (5 games for QPR)
1993/94: Chris Makin (6 games for Oldham)
1996/97: Richard Ord (8 games for Sunderland)
2010/11: Laurent Koscielny (8 games for Arsenal) I'm grateful to Infostrada Sports for alerting me to the contrast in starts between the two Cisses. While Djibril has been sent off twice, Papiss Cisse at Newcastle has scored five goals in his first six matches, equalling the club record set by Les Ferdinand nearly 17 years ago. However, the quickest player to reach five goals in Premier League history remains Pavel Pogrebnyak, who netted five in his first three games for Fulham earlier this year.

MERSEY PARADISE
Dear Martin love the column After Arsenal beat Everton away on Wednesday night this meant they have beaten both Merseyside clubs this year in Liverpool. Apart from Arsenal this year have any other teams managed to do this? Also interesting Arsenal lost both times in Manchester has any other team in a season won the maximum points in Liverpool against the two clubs and gained no points in Manchester against the Manchester clubs. Many Thanks El Kelm (Arsenal fan)
MARTIN SAYS: Thanks to the boffins at Opta I can tell you that Arsenal are the 20th side to win at both Liverpool and Everton in the same Premier League season following their 2-1 success at Anfield and their 1-0 victory at Goodison Park. It's the first time that any side has pulled off that Premier League double since 2009/10 when Arsenal once again picked up six points on Merseyside. Last season was one of only six seasons in Premier League history when no team picked up maximum points on Merseyside and back in 1993/94 we saw four teams go to Anfield and Goodison Park and come away with six points - Blackburn, Newcastle, Norwich and Tottenham. To answer your other question we have looked at the 20 teams to have won both games on Merseyside and considered their record in Manchester in that same season. As you will see from the table below, we can exclude nine of those sides because seven of them were Manchester United teams and two did not play both Manchester clubs, as Manchester City were in a lower division. As you can see, Arsenal have become the first side to pick up six points away at Liverpool and Everton in the Premier League and zero points away at the two Manchester clubs (they lost 1-0 at Man City in December and 8-2 at Man Utd in August). You'll also notice that no side has picked up 12 points from their visits to the two Merseyside clubs and the two Manchester clubs in the Premier League era.

WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT
Hi Martin, love the column. After watching Luis Suarez hit the post against QPR, I was wondering who holds the record for hitting the woodwork the most times in one season? Tomas (Liverpool supporter from Belfast)
MARTIN SAYS: According to Opta's statistics, Luis Suarez has now hit the woodwork seven times in the Premier League this season, which is more than any other player. Robin van Persie has hit the post or crossbar on six occasions, while Demba Ba has done so five times. Most Premier League woodwork strikes this season: SEVEN: Luis Suarez
SIX: Robin van Persie
FIVE: Demba Ba
FOUR: Clint Dempsey, Samir Nasri, Bobby Zamora
THREE: Scott Sinclair, Juan Mata, Mario Balotelli, Yohan Cabaye, Adel Taarabt, Adam Johnson, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Leighton Baines, Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll, Roger Johnson Opta have only been keeping data on players hitting the woodwork since the 2000/01 season, but in that period no player has hit the woodwork more times than Suarez has this season. He has become the sixth player to strike the woodwork seven times in one top-flight campaign since the turn of the century and if he does so one more time before the end of the season then he will break that record. Most Premier League woodwork strikes in one season in the 21st century: SEVEN Luis Suarez (2011/12)
Robin van Persie (2008/09)
Robert Hulse (2006/07)
Cristiano Ronaldo (2006/07)
Thierry Henry (2003/04)
Jay-Jay Okocha (2003/04) SIX Robin van Persie (2011/12)
Didier Drogba
Nani (2010/11)
Nani (2010/11)
Kenwyne Jones (2010/11)
Steven Gerrard (2009/10)
Wayne Rooney (2009/10)
Xabi Alonso (2008/09) Steven Gerrard (2008/09)
Fernando Torres (2008/09)
Thierry Henry (2005/06)

LEAGUE OF NATIONS
Hi Martin. Great column, as per usual. Here's one for the boys at Opta. Which country, outside the home nations has the most players who have won the English Premier League? I personally do not count the Republic of Ireland as being a home nation by the way (being Irish) but I would presume that they are at the top and would suggest that maybe Holland, France or Denmark are right up there as well. Would just be interested to find out which country has supplied the most "successful" players to the league Matt Ruddell (Coventry City fan)
MARTIN SAYS: According to the Premier League's list of medal winners, England are indeed the nation with the most Premier League medal-winners, as 61 English players have claimed medals since the competition began in 1992/93. However, the other home nations have not fared as well as you suggest. Scotland have just four Premier League winners (Darren Ferguson, Brian McClair, Colin Hendry and Darren Fletcher), Wales have just three (Clayton Blackmore, Ryan Giggs and Mark Hughes), while Northern Ireland have two (Roy Carroll and Jonny Evans). In fact, France (20 winners), Netherlands (9), Portugal (7) and Brazil (7) have more Premier League-winning players than any of the home nations. As you'll see from the table below, Republic of Ireland have just five and you also mention Denmark who have only produced one Premier League-winning player - Peter Schmeichel - although he did win it five times. Nations who have produced more than two players to have won a Premier League medal (excluding home nations and including Republic of Ireland):
Country Number of winners Winners
France 20 Aliadiere, Anelka (2), Barthez (2), Blanc,
Cantona (4),Clichy, Cygan, Evra (4),
Gallas (2), Garde, Grimandi (2), Henry (2),
