Tyler's Starting Stat - Capital lessons

I was at Craven Cottage on Monday night, where Chelsea were awarded their 12th penalty of the season, but converted for only the seventh time. It took Frank Lampard's penalty record to 42 out of 48 for Chelsea with what was his 150th Premier League goal. Chelsea still haven't won a London derby in the league this season and have drawn with Fulham 1-1 on both occasions. Meanwhile, Martin Jol's men have only lost one derby out of seven, which was at home to Spurs on November 6. Yet they still can't beat Chelsea. They've beaten their West London rivals just once in 22 games in the Premier League; that was in March 2006 when a Luis Boa Morte goal gave them a 1-0 win. That was their only win in the last 27 league meetings and in the last 32 of all clashes in all competitions going back to 1979. Clint Dempsey scored his 49th Premier League goal for Fulham in his 180th appearance, extending his Fulham record for both goals and appearances. The game also heralded another seven minutes of Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba being on the pitch together with neither man scoring. They've now been on the field at the same time for 11hrs 57mins without either of them getting on the scoresheet.

FRANK ON THE SPOT
Hi Martin, Following Lampard's impressive feat of being the first midfielder to score 150 goals in the Premier League, can you tell me how many of the 150 goals were from the penalty spot? It does seem like he scores a lot of pens! Stephen Cranham (Newcastle Utd fan) MARTIN SAYS: I can tell you that of Frank Lampard's 150 Premier League goals, a total of 37 have come from the penalty spot. That's 24.6% of his league goals. To date, a total of 22 players have scored 100 Premier League goals or more and of those players only one has scored more penalties than Lampard. That man is the league's all-time leading scorer Alan Shearer, who scored 56 of his 260 goals from the spot (21.5%). As you can see from the list below, only one of the Premier League's centurions has scored a higher percentage of his goals from the penalty spot. That man is Matt Le Tissier (who was the co-commentator on Monday night), who scored 25 of his 100 goals from the spot (exactly 25%). You'll notice that the Premier League's second-highest scorer of all time, Andrew Cole, only ever scored one penalty - and that was for Fulham at Birmingham in January 2005. Furthermore, two players in this list - Les Ferdinand and Emile Heskey - have scored more than 100 goals without ever scoring a penalty in the league. I would like to add that it is wrong to undervalue the skill and temperament needed to score a penalty successfully. Penalties are awarded and Chelsea's record this season (seven goals from 12 awards) shows it's not a formality. If you score a penalty it should not be dismissed as an easy job; it takes practice and nerve against the Premier League's big, athletic goalkeepers. Penalty goals should not be undervalued. SPRINGTIME SCORERS
Hi Martin. Our January signing Pappis Demba Cisse has now scored 10 goals in nine appearances for Newcastle since joining us in the transfer window. Has any other player scored more goals than he has without opening their account before the turn of the year? Martin (Newcastle Utd fan) MARTIN SAYS: Papiss Cisse is only the fourth player in Premier League history to reach double figures in a season without scoring a goal before January 1. His tally of 10 goals (and counting) has only been bettered by the following players: ROBIN VAN PERSIE (2010/11) - 18 GOALS: It's hard to believe that the Arsenal striker didn't score a league goal last season before January 1. He made eight appearances before the turn of the year without scoring, but went on to finish with 18 to his name. JAN-AAGE FJORTOFT (1993/94) - 12 GOALS: Fjortoft didn't score his first Premier League goal for Swindon until January 22 1994, his 11th appearance for the club, but he went on to finish the campaign with 12 strikes to his name. ANTHONY YEBOAH (1994/95) - 12 GOALS: Leeds signed Yeboah in January 1995 and he opened his account on February 22 against Everton, before going on to net a further 11 goals that season. Unlike Cisse, both Van Persie and Fjortoft played in the Premier League before the turn of the year. That means Yeboah holds the Premier League goalscoring record for players who made their first appearance of the season in January or later. Cisse needs to score twice in the last five games of the season to match that record. Out of interest, Van Persie's tally of 18 goals is the joint-highest scored between January 1 and the end of the season in any Premier League campaign. He shares the record with Thierry Henry (2003/04) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2007/08) - but both of those players also scored goals before January 1. This season, Clint Dempsey is the only other player in double figures in the Premier League since January 1.

BAGGING, BUT NOT FLAGGING
Hi Martin, during the Swansea v Newcastle match, Newcastle did not have a single corner. This must be quite a rare feat, how many other teams have won a match after not having a corner during it? Cheers Paddy (Newcastle fan) MARTIN SAYS: Opta have been keeping data on this since the start of the 2006/07 season and in that period, teams winning Premier League games despite winning no corners is more common than you might think. In fact, it's happened 24 times in the last six years, according to our stats. This season it's happened more than ever, with no less than eight winning teams failing to win a corner all game. Blackburn and Everton have fought to victory without corners three times each, while Chelsea have done it twice. The team to have been beaten most often having conceded no corners is Liverpool, with four times. I must admit, I would have thought this would be a rarity, so I'm surprised to see it's happened so often. I'm also surprised to see so many home teams in this list, as you would think away sides would be the ones to have won fewer corners. Can we please have a list of the top ten butter-fingered gloves from Opta? Keep up the great work. Kind Regards, Aspi Bilia, Gunner fan MARTIN SAYS: I don't think it's fair to call them buttered-fingered gloves, but we have looked into this anyway! The simple answer to your question is David James, who has conceded 665 Premier League goals. He has conceded nearly 100 more goals than any other goalkeeper in Premier League history, but it must be borne in mind that he has played in more than 100 more games than any other goalkeeper in Premier League history as well! Below we have listed the 15 goalkeepers to have conceded more than 300 Premier League goals with Mark Schwarzer and then your guess Paul Robinson. We have also calculated the number of goals each of them conceded per game and as you can see, James' ratio of goals conceded per game is one of the most impressive. At 1.16, he was bettered only by Nigel Martyn and Edwin van der Sar in this list of 15. Blackburn's current custodian Paul Robinson and former Southampton stopper Paul Jones are the men with the unwanted lead in the goals-conceded-to-games charts at an average of around 1.61. Hi Martin, I heard in commentary on Monday that Clint Dempsey's 16 goals this season is a club record in the Premier League. So I was wondering if you could give me a list of players who hold that accolade for each of the other teams to have played in the Premier League? Fred Bird MARTIN SAYS: We've had to ask our friends at Opta for some help with this one Fred and below you will find a list of top scorers in a season for every single team to have graced the Premier League, but here are a few things which standout for me. Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer remain the Premier League's all-time top scorers in a single campaign with 34 goals each for Newcastle and Blackburn respectively. They're also two of five players in that prestigious '30 club', which includes Thierry Henry (30), Kevin Phillips (30) for Sunderland and Cristiano Ronaldo (31) in 2007/2008 for Manchester United. Meanwhile, Steven Fletcher and Tony Cottee are the only two players to achieve this feat with two different clubs. Cottee holds the record amount of goals in a single Premier League season for both Everton and Leicester City, while Fletcher has been the top man at both Burnley and with his current employers Wolves, where he has already equalled last season's record tally of 10. It may also interest Tottenham fans to know that, despite the club's abundance of attacking flair in recent years, no player has surpassed Teddy Sheringham's tally of 21 from way back in 1992/1993. I also recall he scored one for Nottingham Forest in that season - the first ever live Premier League goal on Sky Sports!
