Jack McBean scored twice as LA Galaxy climbed into the MLS Western Conference play-off places with a 3-1 win at the Colorado Rapids.

McBean opened the scoring past Tim Howard after only five minutes at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and, because Dillon Serna equalised eight minutes before the break, he made sure to complete his double - doubling his career total - shortly after the hour mark.

Romain Alessandrini's later penalty put the outcome beyond doubt and the Galaxy, unbeaten in eight games, now sit fifth in the standings.

Scott Sutter denied the Seattle Sounders the chance to make a similar leap up the table with his stoppage-time goal forcing a 1-1 draw at CenturyLink Field.

Will Bruin had Seattle ahead for over 70 minutes but Orlando City right-back Sutter fully capitalised on a Kaka pass at the death to grab a share of the spoils.

DC United and Minnesota United both snatched dramatic victories to escape the basements of their respective divisions.

Ben Olsen's DC began Wednesday propping up the Eastern Conference having failed to secure a home win since early April but Patrick Nyarko's 60th-minute goal - his first of the season - settled a 2-1 victory over Atlanta United at RFK Stadium.

Julian Gressel had fired the visitors ahead after 17 minutes but Luciano Acosta levelled six minutes later.

Expansion club Minnesota climbed off the bottom of the Western Conference by responding to back-to-back defeats with a 3-2 triumph over the Portland Timbers.

Both franchises had a man dismissed - Abu Danladi for Minnesota and Sebastian Blanco for the Timbers - after all five goals had been scored.

Amobi Okugo's early own goal gave Minnesota the lead and Christian Ramirez's 47th-minute effort restored their advantage after Diego Valeri had equalised from the penalty spot before the break.

Another own goal, this time from Minnesota's Francisco Calvo, levelled the scores up again at 2-2 but the home side were not to be denied as Danladi notched a 64th-minute winner before seeing red, with Blanco soon following him down the tunnel.
