Manchester United midfielder Fred appeared to be struck by an object thrown from the crowd during their 2-1 derby win over Manchester City on Saturday.
The incident happened in the 68th minute of the match at the Etihad after Fred went over to take a corner near the area of the stadium that divided the home fans from the away supporters.
TV footage showed three lighters and a plastic bottle that appeared to have been thrown at Fred's team-mate Jesse Lingard.
Brazil international Fred then went over to the ball when he appeared to be hit by something.
The rest of the match appeared to proceed without incident off the pitch.
On the field of play, an 85th-minute goal from City substitute Nicolas Otamendi was not enough to cancel out first half efforts from United, with Marcus Rashford scoring from the penalty spot (23) before Anthony Martial fired home six minutes later.
