Premier League: Sunderland winger Adam Johnson backs new signings

Adam Johnson says Sunderland’s new recruits have settled in quickly and he is not worried that further changes to the squad could cause problems.

Jack Rodwell became the club’s fifth summer signing on Tuesday when he made the move from Manchester City, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones, Patrick van Aanholt and Costel Pantilimon to the Stadium of Light.

A host of other players have been linked with Sunderland and Johnson is anticipating further business before the transfer deadline.

While it can take teams time to gel together when there a lot of new arrivals, Johnson believes that Sunderland are well equipped to cope because they have developed a settled approach under Gus Poyet.

“I think from now until the start of the season there will be a big change again - outgoings and ingoings I would imagine,” he told the Sunderland Echo.

“But as long as we can keep the basics of what we want to do as a team, I don’t think we’ll have any problems.

“There’s been a lot of talk about different players. We’ll have to see who else arrives, but the players who are already here have fitted in quickly.

“I think to be honest, the only reason players don’t settle in too quickly is when they can’t speak the language. You’re a long way away from home and can’t understand what is going on.

“When you can speak English, it’s pretty simple these days. The banter is usually the same and everyone gets on.”
