Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero has rubbished reports suggesting that he snubbed a move to Manchester United.

The man who graced the World Cup final over the summer was said to have turned down a switch to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day.

Having shone in Brazil, a number of leading European clubs were said to be keeping a close eye on the 27-year-old shot-stopper.

Romero was, however, quick to distance himself from the rumours of Premier League interest at the time and has reiterated that no offer from England was put to him.

A man who remains on the books at Sampdoria after spending the 2013/14 campaign on loan at Monaco told Radio Nacional: “Many lies have been spread, like, for example, that I refused a transfer to Manchester United.

“To me, something like that is crazy.”

Having seen the transfer window close with no move put in place, Romero now finds himself playing back-up to Emiliano Viviano in Serie A – a situation he admits is far from ideal.

He added: “I can’t do this for much longer.

“The same thing happened to me in France – arriving a club when the transfer window is nearly closed and having to wait for an opportunity.

“I am happy at Sampdoria, though, and I will keep showing the coach that I am ready to play and that I don’t want to keep sitting on the bench.”
