Steven Gerrard missed an early penalty but got on the scoresheet late on as the LA Galaxy beat Real Salt Lake 5-2 to move up to third.

After Gerrard missed a sixth minute spot-kick, Juan Manuel Martinez put Real ahead early on but the Galaxy's response was swift and decisive - with Gyasi Zardes, Mike Magee, Emmanuel Boateng and Giovani dos Santos making it 4-1 by half-time. 

Javier Morales' penalty cut the deficit before Gerrard struck in stoppage time.

Highlights of Philadelphia Union v New York City FC from the MLS.

Kei Kamara's penalty was enough for the Columbus Crew to beat the ten-man Houston Dynamo 1-0, increasing the pressure on Owen Coyle. Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric was sent off 18 minutes in when he fouled Justin Meram to concede the spot-kick.

DC United beat the New England Revolution 3-0 with goals from Lamar Neagle, Luciano Acosta and Alvaro Saborio.

The Philadelphia Union climbed to the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference standings on Saturday evening thanks to a 2-0 win over struggling New York City FC.

Chris Pontius and CJ Sapong struck in the first half to make it three out of three for the Union at home, while Patrick Vieira's New York side have not won since the season opener on March 6.

Sebastian Giovinco scored in either half, the first from the penalty spot after Jozy Altidore was fouled by Victor Cabrera.

Didier Drogba made his first start of the year for Montreal but could not inspire a comeback.

Western Conference leaders FC Dallas were humbled in a 3-0 loss away to the struggling Vancouver Whitecaps. Maynor Figueroa's first-half own goal gifted Vancouver the lead and Jordan Harvey and Kekuta Manneh made sure after the break.

Dallas now lead by a single point from the Colorado Rapids, who beat the Seattle Sounders 3-1.

Jermaine Jones opened the scoring in the first half before Luis Solignac doubled the advantage six minutes after the interval. Jordan Morris pulled a goal back but Kevin Doyle's late strike secured the win.
