MLS: LA Galaxy team and captain Robbie Keane meet US president Barack Obama

The LA Galaxy team has capped off a title-winning season with a visit to United States president Barack Obama.

The meeting in the White House recognised the title-winning efforts of the Galaxy team in last year's Major League Soccer season.

Galaxy won the Western Conference title before going on to win the MLS Cup final in extra time.

Keane captained the team to the title and scored the winning goal in the final.

Barack Obama welcomed the LA Galaxy to the White House

The Republic of Ireland intenational joined Galaxy from Tottenham in 2011, and was named this season's MLS Most Valuable Player.

Obama claimed the United States was "starting to realise what the beautiful game is all about", and called to the fore Galaxy player Robbie Rogers, the MLS league's first openly gay player.

"I want to recognise what Robbie Rogers of the Galaxy has done for a lot of people by blazing a trail as one of professional sports' first openly gay players," Obama said.
