Brazilian playmaker Kaka has been appointed captain of Orlando City ahead of the new club’s Major League Soccer debut next week.

Kaka, the 2007 world player of the year, will take on the role when Orlando host fellow MLS expansion side New York City on March 8 at the Citrus Bowl.

Orlando coach and former Everton striker Adrian Heath said: "Kaka has demonstrated great leadership both on the field and in the locker room since the start.

“The other players have naturally looked to his guidance throughout pre-season, so he was the natural pick to skipper the club."

Kaka signed for Orlando last summer after his contract with AC Milan was terminated by mutual consent.

The 32-year-old has scored 29 goals in 89 appearances for Brazil and has had a loan spell with Sao Paulo since making his move to the MLS.
