The best and worst from a thrilling weekend of Premier League football in England's top flight.

Team of the week

Goal of the Weekend

Raul Meireles No contest. Meireles' wicked dipping volley from 20 yards five minutes into the second half gave Wayne Hennessey no chance. There were some great strikes over the weekend but Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles takes the honours with his stunning effort in the win over Wolves. The Portuguese star followed up his first goal for the club in last weekend's Merseyside derby with a brilliant dipping volley from fully 25 yards which gave Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey no chance. The effort was a real goal of the season contender from the former Porto man.

Players of the weekend

Dimitar Berbatov & Robin van Persie This award is shared by Dimitar Berbatov and Robin van Persie following their hat-trick heroics for Manchester United and Arsenal respectively. Berbatov netted his third hat-trick of the season with a clinical treble in the 5-0 rout of Birmingham at Old Trafford. The treble takes his tally for the campaign to 18 goals in all competitions meaning it his best season for United since his big money arrival from Spurs in the summer of 2008. Van Persie is making up for lost time after a frustrating spell this season due to injury. The Dutchman scored twice against West Ham last weekend, but he went one better against Wigan with his first hat-trick in English football. Van Persie could have grabbed more than three against Wigan as he also missed a penalty, but Gunners fans will be hoping he can keep up his fine recent form as Arsenal look to maintain their challenge for the Premier League title.

Miss of the Weekend

Wayne Rooney The Manchester United does not normally features for this unwanted prize, but his miss against Birmingham was a shocker. Rooney looked certain to score when Nani picked him out at the far post, but from just two yards out the England star somehow directed his effort wide of the target. Luckily for Rooney the miss did not matter in the result as United ran out convincing 5-0 winners at Old Trafford. Mention also must be made of Keith Fahey's failure to score in the same game when he inexplicably failed to convert Matt Derbyshire's cross with the goal at his mercy.

Save of the Weekend

Ali Al Habi Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi was overworked at the Emirates Stadium as he kept down his side's defeat to Arsenal to only 3-0. The loan star from Bolton was in fine form throughout the game, but arguably his best save came in the first half when he produced a fine reflex save to keep out Robin van Persie's point-blank shot. Honourable mention must also go to West Ham keeper Robert Green for his full-stretch save to keep out Louis Saha's powerful shot during the 2-2 draw at Everton.

Controversy of the Weekend

Frederic Piquionne's sending off Piquionne's sending off in the draw at Everton infuriated West Ham boss Avram Grant as he felt it cost his side two crucial points at Goodison Park. The Frenchman had just scored to give West Ham the lead with a superb header from Wayne Bridge's cross, but his over exuberant celebrations cost his side dear. Piquionne jumped an advertising hoarding to run to the away fans and as a result the player was handed a second yellow card by referee Peter Walton. Everton made West Ham pay deep into stoppage-time as Marouane Fellaini bagged an equaliser for the home side.

Gaffe of the Weekend

Gabriel Tamas 0G v Blackburn Gabriel Tamas will not want to reminded of his goal against Blackburn as it came at the wrong end. The Romanian had a nightmare as he inexplicably rose highest to head David Dunn's cross into his own net past Boaz Myhill. It was a header a striker would have been proud of, but unfortunately for Tamas it was his in his own net.

Moment of the Weekend

Darren Bent Darren Bent made most of the headlines during the week following his shock move from Sunderland to Aston Villa and he put his name up on lights again with the winner on his debut against Manchester City The England international repaid the first slice of his club record £18million fee with the only game of the game att Villa Park. Bent has a knack on scoring on his debut for clubs and he continued the run with his strike after 18 minutes. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Villa faithful and they will be hoping it is the first of many goals Bent scores for his new club as they look to climb clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table.
