Morecambe boss swiftly plays down speculation

Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy has quickly ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Shrewsbury job following Paul Simpson's exit. McIlroy guided his Shrimps side to a 3-2 victory at the Prostar on Saturday which propelled the Lancashire club back into the play-off places ahead of the final weekend of the season. McIlroy, who was linked with the Shrews position back in March 2008 before Simpson was appointed, said: "I'm happy with Morecambe, thanks." Shrews went into the clash with coach Stuart Delaney in charge of team affairs after Simpson was sacked on Friday due to the Shropshire club's failure to make the play-offs. Delaney afterwards admitted he did not think he would be awarded the position even if he did choose to apply, while various names are already being thrown into the hat. Former Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock is one of the early favourites, while Mark Venus and Dean Windass are believed to be interested.
