Napoli fan Ciro Esposito, who was shot before the Coppa Italia final last month, has died.

The 29-year-old had been fighting for his life in a hospital in Rome since being shot on May 3 during violent clashes prior to the final in Rome. He died on Wednesday morning.

Two other Napoli supporters also received gunshot wounds.

The match between Fiorentina and Napoli in Rome's Stadio Olimpico was delayed for 45 minutes but was eventually played.

A statement from Rome's Gemelli hospital read: "After 50 days of prolonged and intensive resuscitation, Mr Esposito has died of multiple organ failure."

Naples mayor Luigi De Magistris used his Twitter account to announce a day of mourning in the city.

He tweeted: "Ciro has died and in Naples, we proclaim a day of mourning.

"For Ciro, for his family and for our people.

Ciro was one of our fans that wanted to have a good night supporting his team. This tragedy should make the football world and the institutions reflect.

"To say no to violence in football."

The man suspected of shooting Esposito, 48-year-old Roma ultra Daniele De Santis, is being held on charges of attempted murder.

He is also accused of shooting the other two Napoli fans prior to the match.

Napoli football president Aurelio De Laurentiis issued a statement on the club's official website, sscnapoli.it.

It read: "Ciro was one of our fans that wanted to have a good night supporting his team.

"This tragedy should make the football world and the institutions reflect.

"We wish to express to his parents and his family our most sincere condolences from Calcio Napoli."

The Italian Football League (Lega Serie A) also expressed its sadness.

A statement read: "La Lega Serie A expresses its most profound condolences after the death of Ciro Esposito, the young Napoli fan hurt on May 3 in the Coppa Italia final.

"We are close to Ciro's family."
