Experienced defender makes himself unavailable to Bento

Valencia defender Miguel has become the latest Portugal player to retire from international football. The 30-year-old has decided to step aside after making 59 appearances for his country since his debut in 2003. Three other senior figures have made themselves unavailable for Portugal in recent weeks, with Deco, Simao Sabrosa and Paulo Ferreira all calling it quits. Miguel's announcement comes in the same week that Paulo Bento was named new national coach. Bento has replaced Carlos Queiroz at the helm and will try to help Portugal recover from a poor start to their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. Portugal, who drew 4-4 with Cyprus and lost 1-0 to Norway in their opening two matches, face Denmark and Iceland in October.
