Hamilton manager Alex Neil was happy with his team’s performance as they opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Championship club Hearts.

Grant Gillespie headed the only goal for the Scottish Premiership newcomers in the closing few seconds of the contest at New Douglas Park.

Neil said: “We don’t read too much into the result as that’s our first 45 minutes.

Hamilton beat Hearts 1-0 Wednesday night as the club prepare for their first season back in the Scottish Premiership.

“Hearts have already played three or four games - so to play as well as we did was pretty pleasing.”

The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Jamie Walker struck the bar with a fierce shot from just outside the box.

But the decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute as Danny Galbraith’s chip into the box was met by Gillespie whose looping header crept inside the right post and just out of reach of the diving Hearts keeper.
