Simon Finley talks Liverpool and Bruce Grobbelaar ahead of the Carling Cup final
Any fans of Sky Sports' UEFA Champions League coverage will be aware of Sound of Guns. Album track 'Antarctica' has been one of the main background tracks on match-day coverage throughout this season. With that in mind, and with new album 'Angels & Enemies' set for release and a UK tour in March, we chatted with Liverpool-supporting band member and Carling Cup final hopeful Simon Finley.
Liverpool
All my family are fans and my dad took me to a few games when I was six or seven years old. I got hooked from then. I grew up in Liverpool and got to as many games as I could. I'm hoping to go to the Carling Cup final this weekend. I'm waiting on a ticket coming through. Fingers crossed.
Liverpool v Everton... maybe
I can't remember exactly. I think it might have been a derby at Anfield. It was such a long time ago now. But I remember the kits being blue and red... so just assume it was a derby. It was the Kenny Dalglish era when he was managing the first time. I loved everything, the crowd and the performance.
Bruce Grobbelaar
I was a goalie when I was a kid. I used to like jumping around and being at the back. I tried the handstands, but wasn't as good as him.
Old Xaverians
It was a local, South Liverpool club. I played on goal. I think it was playing for them that made me realise I needed to take up another career path. I was letting in 15 goals a game.
1990 World Cup
When I was growing up, it was part of the glory days for Liverpool. The most recent one was the 2007 Champions League final in Athens. I picked the wrong final to go to, because I didn't got to the Istanbul final in 2005. I was playing in a band at the time and couldn't go. But the first was probably Italia '90. That was the first World Cup where I was taking notice. To come so close and play so well and then get beaten on penalties, it was tough.
Liverpool 1980s
I had all of Grobbelaar's goalkeeper tops. But I think my first Liverpool top was the late Eighties replica out-field shirt. It had Crown Paints on the front. My dad bought it for me.
Guns N' Roses, Appetite for Destruction
I've still got it and I'm still a big-time fan. I think it was my brother who was a fan and was bringing home all these albums. I think I bought the picture disk of it on vinyl as well.
