Backing the Blues

Image: Birmingham: look good value to beat Sunderland

Ed Chamberlin picks his bets of the week and says Birmingham can take another big step to safety.

Ed seeks out the value in the weekend's Premier League games

We had a decent week last week with Bolton keeping our run going by making it 11 winning 'bets of the week' from our last 15 selections. Spirit Son did us proud again at Aintree and looks like a Champion Hurdle contender to me, while unfortunately Arbor Supreme never got in to a Grand National that was difficult to watch after the two fatalities. We'll turn our attention to football this week ahead of another big weekend at both ends of the Premier League table. Sky Bet's title odds: 1/6 Man Utd, 5/1 Arsenal, 14/1 Chelsea, 200/1 Man City, 500/1 Tottenham Relegation: 1/3 Wigan, 8/13 Blackpool, 5/6 Wolves, 10/11 West Ham, 5/2 Blackburn, 3/1 Birmingham, 12/1 West Brom, 12/1 Aston Villa 20/1 bar

Manchester United's season continues to build to a brilliant crescendo as their momentum continued with recent wins over Fulham and Chelsea. Like Ballybriggs at Aintree, they are doing nothing flash but taking each obstacle in their stride and looking like they will be very hard to pass on this long run-in. While they now focus on the Manchester derby at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, the other sides will try and keep the title race alive. There's a big game at the Emirates on Sunday as Arsenal (8/11) host Liverpool (4/1) live on Sky Sports HD1. I presented the Monday Night Football at Anfield, where Liverpool were hugely impressive and kept their outside chance of European football alive; they are even down now to 16/1 with Sky Bet to finish in the top four. A win at the Emirates would see those odds shorten further but when I asked Robbie Fowler if they fancied doing Manchester United a favour in their quest for a record 19th title by beating Arsenal, his reply of "don't even go there" summed up Liverpool fans' mixed emotions this weekend. Kenny Dalglish's side have been excellent at Anfield and their new strikers had Jamie Redknapp and Robbie raving in the studio on Monday night but their away form is not convincing enough to suggest they can win at the Emirates. It's a game Arsenal simply have to win. On Saturday, Chelsea (8/13) go to West Brom (9/2), who they put six past on the opening day of the season with Didier Drogba scoring a hat-trick. How times have changed since then. Chelsea have got to pick themselves up from their devastating and morale-sapping Champions League exit at Old Trafford but do have a 100% record over West Brom in the Premier League - nine wins out of nine - scoring 26 goals, conceding just two. Going further back, Chelsea have won the last 13 meetings in the top division and the last three, scoring 12 in the process and conceding none. However, with Chelsea's current form and West Brom flying under Roy Hodgson, it's a brave man who backs the visitors at 8/13. My hopes for a 12th winner from 16 selections rest with Birmingham (6/5), who have a massive game against Sunderland on Saturday. Neither are safe yet, though Birmingham's win against Bolton and point at Blackburn has given them great hope. In contrast, the wheels have come off in dramatic fashion for Sunderland and left their fans wondering where their next point is coming from. Steve Bruce's side have picked up just one point from their last eight Premier League games. They have lost each of their last three and have not scored in last three away. Birmingham are unbeaten in six league meetings at St Andrews with Sunderland, winning three. Sunderland's last top flight win at St Andrews came 28 years ago; 1-0 in November 1983 when Billy Joel was number one in the charts with 'Uptown Girl'. Sunderland still have work to do to secure their place in the "white bread world" of the Premier League. Birmingham are my 'bet of the week' at 6/5 with Sky Bet.
