World Cup memories

1990 - Luciano Pavarotti's 'Nessun Dorma'
(Singing) Duh, duh, duh, duuuh, duh, duuuh. That is probably the only opera song I know. If anyone mentions Pavarotti or opera, I will sing that. It was really powerful song, but I don't know what the hell he was saying. It is a real moment. World in Motion is a classic as well, you have got to love a bit of John Barnes rapping. All these World Cup songs that they bring out now that try to have meaning, it is just football. Rio Ferdinand is a pal of mine and I was talking to him before the last World Cup about trying to do a song because he runs a record label. I reckon I would do a good job.
1994 - Roberto Baggio penalty miss
I used to be a huge fan of Roberto Baggio. He was a really skilful player and in the early 1990s I used to always watch Italian football on the television. I was really in to him and used to be a big Juventus fan. I wanted Italy to win and he hit the decisive penalty over the bar in the final against Brazil. I was devastated. He had this unique ponytail, hedgehog kind of trim, I used to call him the Hedgehog Man. But he was mad talented as well. I think that penalty miss really affected him because after that he was not the same. That is a lot of pressure, your whole country is behind you.
1998 - France win the World Cup
I was ill for the final and watched it in my bed. It was against Brazil. Zinedine Zidane scored two and Emmanuel Petit scored another as France won 3-0. That was probably one of the most enjoyable finals because there were so many players from Arsenal, who I support. That was a really cool final at the Stade de France, which was one of the best stadiums in the world at the time. France winning the World Cup in France was legendary and they wrote the script. It was a beautiful moment.
1998 - Beckham red card
Beckham was sent off against Argentina for just flicking a leg at Diego Simeone and I thought it was really harsh. I thought it was out of order how Beckham became Public Enemy No.1 afterwards. He is from my way, East London, Walthamstow area, I used to know his sister. I felt bad for him because you can't blame one person. But it was a blessing in disguise because after that he put his head down and just became probably the most famous sportsperson in the world. We lost on penalties in the end. I'm not a crier if my team lose, but don't talk to me for the rest of the day.
2002 - Ahn Jung-Hwan knocks out Italy
Ahn Jung-Hwan scored a golden goal against Italy in the last 16 to send South Korea through. He was on loan at Perugia and as soon as he scored they cancelled his contract, that's funny. Korea did really well in that tournament on their home turf. It was quite surprising as they were real underdogs, but they worked hard and got to the semi-finals. All the matches were really early in the day due to the time difference. I'm not a morning person so was catching a lot of the repeats, but some games I was watching in the canteen at college.
2006 - Zidane head-butt
That was hilarious and random. Nobody is ever going to forget that and maybe it takes something away from the memory of Zidane as a player. France lost the final in the end as Italy won on penalties.

2006 - Ronaldo's 'winky eye'
Cristiano Ronaldo got Wayne Rooney sent off when England lost to Portugal in the quarter-finals. It was the winky eye one. Rooney was not fit as he had broken a metatarsal before the tournament. That was a good World Cup. There were a lot of memories from that competition.

2006 - WAGS
They got that completely wrong, it was an absolute shambles. Why are you taking your missus? I'm sorry, that is a total joke. I know you are in a foreign country and you want your family around, but... do you know what I mean? If I had it my way, 'your missus has got to stay home, mate'. At the end of the day, this is work time and you don't want to be distracted. Look at Beckham, I remember they were taking the pee out of his mum. It must frustrate you and you need to be focusing on football. There were so many things wrong with that World Cup that backfired on England.
