Team of the week

Game of the week

Marseille 1 Real Madrid 3 This really was an excellent game. Marseille were fighting for a place in the knockout phase while Real knew they could not rest on their laurels, or otherwise risk the unthinkable of not securing a last-16 berth. The clash exploded into life after just five minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo sent one of his trademark free-kicks crashing home. However, the home side responded just seven minutes later when Lucho Gonzalez volleyed in from close range. Marseille then had a goal disallowed before Ronaldo saw a header hit the woodwork. News of AC Milan losing in Switzerland soon sent the Stade Velodrome buzzing amid the possibility of qualification. But Real dented spirits early in the second half as Raul Albiol arrowed home. Marseille were then gifted a way back into the game after Iker Casillas came out rashly, but Lucho saw his spot-kick come back off the crossbar. And to rub further salt in the l'OM wounds, a mistake from Steve Mandanda allowed Ronaldo to bag his second of what was a cracking game.

Player of the week

Michael Owen The Manchester United striker scored an excellent hat-trick as a weakened Red Devils side won 3-1 at Wolfsburg. Owen's first came in the 44th minute as he angled in a fine header from a Nani cross. Super work from Gabriel Obertan then allowed the predatory Owen to tap into an empty net at the back post. And he sealed his trio of goals in injury-time, bursting from the halfway line before chipping ever so sweetly over goalkeeper Diego Benaglio. The performance was a reminder to England manager Fabio Capello of Owen's ability, although the striker will know he must demonstrate such form on a regular basis if he is to book a ticket to South Africa's World Cup next year.

Performance of the week

Bayern Munich Scintillating stuff from the Bundesliga giants, who needed to win in Turin in order to book a spot in the next round of the Champions League. When David Trezeguet put Juventus in front on 19 minutes, things did not appear to be going to plan for Louis van Gaal's men. However, in the 30th minute Bayern were awarded a spot-kick, and up stepped goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt, who buried in the coolest of manners. The impressive Ivica Olic then helped turn the game on its head before Mario Gomez confirmed Bayern's dominance with a finish from close range with seven minutes remaining. And Bayern's outstanding display was capped off with a fourth goal in injury-time as substitute Anatoliy Tymoshchuk rifled home past keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Goal of the week

Mario Balotelli This was a tough choice. As already mentioned, Ronaldo scored a similar blistering free-kick to that of Balotelli's, but the latter's impressed that little bit more. Also, credit must go to Porto striker Hulk for his tricky step-over and thumping finish against Atletico Madrid. And furthermore, praise indeed for APOEL's excellent team goal against Chelsea that was rounded off by Marcin Zewlakow. But the winner is Balotelli for his monster of a free-kick. Inter Milan were winning 1-0 at the time and needed another goal to hand them breathing space versus Rubin Kazan. And in the 64th minute up stepped the promising Balotelli 34 metres from goal. The Italian's effort was hit with stunning venom and swerved outrageously as it left shot-stopper Sergei Ryzhikov with not a prayer.

Pass of the week

Aaron Ramsey Lassana Diarra's through ball for Ronaldo's second goal against Marseille caused havoc in the French club's backline and ultimately resulted in a goal. But Ramsey's pass for Arsenal really was a joy to behold. The young Welshman enjoyed a fine game at Olympiakos, and it appears early comparisons between him and the world-class Cesc Fabregas are founded. In the second half, Ramsey got his head up before unleashing a stunning pass with the outside of his right boot. The ball bent through Olympiakos' backline and weighted perfectly into the path of Theo Walcott, whose eventual effort was blocked. It was a fabulous ball that deserved to be concluded with a goal.

Miss of the week

Andrea Barzagli The Italian defender was presented with a golden opportunity to hand Wolfsburg the lead against United, but the chance went a-begging. The German club won an early corner and must have fancied their chances of taking advantage of a much-changed Red Devils backline. In went the delivery and there stood Barzagli, just five yards out from goal. The defender met with the ball but his header flashed off target and over. A poor miss. Also, a mention for Juventus forward Trezeguet, who should probably have done better with a chance he was presented with against Bayern. The strike, though, was wayward.

Controversy of the week

Extra ball at Besiktas Not too much to choose from here, but an incident at Besiktas Inonu Stadium did catch the eye. Much was at stake in this encounter as CSKA Moscow pushed for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League while Besiktas aimed to qualify for the Europa League. The game was tied at 1-1, with Wolfsburg losing to United in Group B's other match. Late on, Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber embarked on a run way out from his goal. He did well to drop his shoulder and beat the pressing striker, but then he lost his footing on the surface and slipped, allowing CSKA to gain possession as Rustu charged back towards his net. CSKA looked to take advantage but, all of a sudden, an extra ball was thrown onto the pitch, seemingly by the home support, in a bid to disrupt the play. The move did not result in a goal. Fortunately for CSKA, though, they did hit a late winner via Evgeni Aldonin.

Save of the week

Sergio Romero After Standard Liege had won a free-kick, in went a deep delivery into AZ Alkmaar's box. Romero opted to come out of his goal in a bid to claim the ball, but soon changed his mind, meaning he was caught in no man's land. Igor De Camargo improvised as he directed a super overhead at goal. It looped well and threatened to drop home but a stunning piece of agility by Romero ensured he tipped the ball onto the woodwork.

Gaffe of the week

John Obi Mikel There were a couple of goalkeeping clangers on show during the week. Real's Casillas will not look back too fondly on his decision to come out of his goal against Marseille after he clattered into Mamadou Niang. Barcelona shot-stopper Victor Valdes was also suspect when he allowed a Dynamo Kiev free-kick to squeeze home. But the villain of the week is Mikel after his short pass ensured APOEL claimed a memorable draw. Nenad Mirosavljuevic stole Mikel's poor ball and off he powered before sliding in the equaliser with three minutes remaining.
