Burton captain John Mousinho has signed a one-year contract extension.

Mousinho was into the final 12 months of his existing deal but he has put pen to paper on fresh terms to keep him at the club until the summer of 2017.

The 29-year-old moved to the Pirelli Stadium from Preston in 2014 and played a pivotal role in Burton's League Two title success during his first season in Staffordshire.

Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Robbie Weir, 26, has also agreed a new contract but has yet to sign.

"He (Mousinho) has signed on for an extra year, which he signed on Friday, and we have been in negotiations for a while," said Burton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

"So Mousinho, the captain, is done. We are talking to Robbie Weir at the moment, and I've got an agreement with him and his agent.

"But now it has to be put on paper and signed. Hopefully that will be done."

Mousinho and Weir were both out of contract in the summer and would have been free to talk to other clubs in January.

Matt Palmer, Damien McCrory, Dean Lyness, Timmy Thiele, Phil Edwards, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, George Taft, Darius Charles, Lucas Akins and Kelvin Maynard are all into the final months of their contracts.

Hasselbaink added: "For me, as a manager, if I don't start negotiations now, I'm not doing my job right. The others will come but those two were first."
