Burton's Ben Turner has been banned for five matches over his clash with Brentford midfielder Nico Yennaris.
Turner was charged with an aggravated breach of the Football Association's E3 rule, the allegation being that he used insulting language with a reference to ethnicity, nationality or race.
Yennaris was born in London to a Cypriot father and a mother with Chinese heritage.
The charge was upheld by an Independent Regulatory Commission, and centre-half Turner will now sit out Burton's games against Huddersfield, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Ipswich and Birmingham. The commission also fined Turner £8,000 and ordered him to attend an education course.
However, Burton can appeal after receiving written reasons for the decision and therefore the sanctions will not apply immediately and Turner can play in the Sky Bet Championship fixture at Huddersfield on Saturday.
"We are incredibly disappointed with the outcome of the hearing," Burton manager Nigel Clough told the club's website. "We won't be making any further comment until we receive the written reasons from the FA Regulatory Commission."
Brentford later released a statement confirming the outcome and highlighting their co-operation with the FA.
It read: "Brentford FC is aware of the five-game ban issued by the Football Association to Burton Albion defender Ben Turner relating to the game between the teams on Saturday 10 December.
"Turner was found guilty of using abusive and/or insulting words towards Nico Yennaris. These words included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and were therefore adjudged to be an aggravated breach of FA rules. Turner was also fined £8,000 and ordered to attend an education course.
"Nico and Brentford FC have complied with all requests made by the FA during this process. No-one from the club will be making any comment on this matter."
