Serbia knew a win over Slovenia would secure them second place in Group C behind group winners Italy.
The Serbs were trailing Slovenia on Tuesday when they were awarded a penalty and a chance to level matters in the contest.
Vidic had agreed to take the spot-kicks, however, the Manchester United defender's effort was saved by Samir Handanovic.
Serbia's defeat meant Estonia finished in second spot and the 29-year-old is gutted he will not get to represent his country at the European Championship.
Consequences
"I took responsibility and I am aware of the consequences of a poorly executed penalty," Vidic told
Blic Sport.
"It was agreed that I [would take it], but I wanted to take responsibility. I will bear the consequences of missed penalties.
"If I had scored, the game would [have flowed on an] entirely different course.
"I'm sorry that I will never play at the European Championships because the following qualifications [are too far away]."
Stankovic retirement
Meanwhile, Serbia captain Dejan Stankovic has revealed he is retiring from international football following their failure to qualify.
The Inter Milan midfielder, who equalled Savo Milosevic's record of 102 caps in Tuesday's defeat to Slovenia, has admitted he will quit the national team after their next friendly which will see him become the country's most-capped player.
"For me it was my last competitive match for the national side. I'll still have a farewell match, but then it's goodbye," Stankovic told
Sportski Zurnal.
