Mexico move into third while USA and Honduras both win
Mexico edged a step closer to qualifying for South Africa next summer after a 3-0 win over Costa Rica, with Giovani Dos Santos in particularly inspired form.
The Tottenham forward opened the scoring in a must win game for Javier Aguirre's side seconds before half-time.
Mexico doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Dos Santos slipped in Guillermo Franco before Andres Guardado, again supplied by Dos Santos, sealed the win on 70 minutes.
The victory saw the Mexicans go above
Costa Rica on goal difference and into the final automatic qualifying spot in third.
USA stay second, one point ahead of Mexico and level on points with Honduras, after coming from behind to beat
El Salvador.
Christian Castillo gave the visitors the lead on 32 minutes but quick-fire goals from Clint Dempsey on 42 minutes and on-loan Hull City striker Jozy Altidore in first-half stoppage time turned the game in the USA's favour.
Meanwhile
Honduras stay top after a 4-1 thumping of
Trinidad & Tobago at the Estadio Olimpico.
Carlos Pavon helped himself to a brace in the 19th and then 28th minute before Amado Guevara and David Suazo got in on the act in the second half.
Jerry Baptiste pulled a goal back for the visitors but it proved to be merely a consolation in the 85th minute.
