Team America

Martin Hines gets to grips with the squad of his adopted nation, USA, and hopes for a draw in their opening game against England.

Can the USA win the World Cup? With the most handsome man in the world in their squad, anything is possible...

America, the land of the free, the home of Hollywood, and the only place in the world more obnoxious than Shoreditch, East London - what's not to love? I will be covering the mighty United States for the duration of their World Cup adventure, a fact that leaves me with mixed emotions. Being a born and bred Englishman, I of course hope that we manage to win the hallowed Jules Rimet trophy, but considering out first game is against the USA, I also want to write as much as possible, so a draw, with both teams going through the group stage would suit me fine. The American squad is actually pretty strong on paper, but that might be because I've held it down with weights. Their goalkeepers are arguably stronger than England's choices, with Tim Howard, Braz Guzan and Marcus Hahnemann grappling for the number one jersey. And when you consider that Brad Friedel has retired from international football, they have an incredible strength in depth in that position. The defence is filled with people I've never heard of, and people who I once had on Football Manager. The most notable name is Oguchi Onyewu, the ex Newcastle and current AC Milan defender, who has offered to play for his club for free due to his injury woes over the last season.
Fantastic
Landon Donovan might have the most annoying face in the world, but he's a fantastic footballer, and he is ably assisted in midfield by perhaps the most handsome man in the world, and certainly the most talented rapper, Clint Dempsey. Michael Bradley, the boss's son, anchors the midfield, and Stuart Holden, the Scottish born Bolton star could be a man to look out for. No place in the squad for Freddy Adu, the oldest 21-year-old in the world... Leading the line includes the superbly named Edson Buddle, and the worst striker in the Premier League last year, the beefy, but ultimately crap Jozy Altidore. I honestly think this America team could win the World Cup, and I'm not just saying that because J.R. from Dallas is holding a gun to my head. Come on America!
