England U17s were hammered 7-0 by their Netherlands counterparts in the opening match of the Algarve Tournament.
John Peacock’s team beat the Dutch in last year’s European Championship final, but they suffered a humiliating reverse this time – and the young man who did much of the damage was Manchester City winger Javairo Dilrosun.
The final scoreline could have been worse – England were 4-0 down after the opening 18 minutes.
Feynoord youngster Rashaan Fernandes scored the first five minutes in, taking advantage of a slip in midfield, holding off the challenge of Easah Suliman before sliding the ball past keeper Aston Oxborough.
England handed the Dutch the second on a plate five minutes later – Norwich keeper Oxborough’s clearance hit defender Cameron Humphreys on the back and rebounded in.
Fernandes then tore down the left and made it all the way into the six-yard box before pulling the ball back for Teun Bijleveld to turn home.
Fernandes created the fourth too on 18, his superb ball from the right finding Dilrosum – a 16-year-old who joined City from Ajax last year - who volleyed home from ten yards and then scored his second just before the break.
England improved in the second half but rarely looked like scoring, and they conceded two more.
Jay-Roy Grot made it 6-0 from close range before Dilrosum sealed his hat-trick with a brilliant free-kick in the dying minutes.
England’s next game will be against hosts Portugal on Sunday.
