Blues boss insists full-back never faced sack threat

Carlo Ancelotti insists Chelsea never contemplated sacking Ashley Cole in the wake of revelations that he shot a work placement student. The Blues full-back has faced internal punishment for his actions after hitting a 21-year-old with a pellet fired from an air rifle at the club's Cobham training ground. Cole will, however, remain part of the first-team set-up at Stamford Bridge and is set to figure for Chelsea in their crunch clash with Manchester United on Tuesday. Ancelotti maintains that he has handled the situation in the best possible manner, with there no need to crack down hard on those who have made an honest mistake.

Behaviour

He said in the Daily Star: "It was an accident. What do we have to do now? Kill him? No. We have to support him. "There was never any chance of him being sacked. Ashley made a mistake. "I have spoken with him and he was really disappointed with this. He's always put in very good behaviour here. He made a mistake and he knows this. "Now we have to move. When a player says, 'Sorry, I made a mistake', it's difficult to do otherwise."
