Chelsea winger not focused on earning a new contract

Salomon Kalou is not worrying about the prospect of a new contract at Chelsea and is focused on enjoying his football for the rest of the season. The Ivory Coast international's current deal expires in the summer and, prior to his departure earlier this month, former manager Andre Villas-Boas admitted no talks had taken place regarding an extension. Kalou has made over 240 appearances, scoring 60 goals, for Chelsea since his arrival from Feyenoord in 2006, but has featured only 15 times in all competitions this season. However, the versatile attacker proved his worth to the Blues by scoring a decisive away goal in Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Benfica in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. He is aware of his impending status as a free agent, but Kalou appears relaxed regarding his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Happy

"I know my contract ends at the end of the season," said Kalou. "For me the most important thing is not to fight for a new deal, it is just to enjoy myself with the team and play the best I can and help the team win the games we have left to play. "As long as I do that, I am fine and I am happy with myself." The 26-year-old was little more than a bit-part player under Villas-Boas, although he has been given a more important role under interim manager Roberto Di Matteo. The Italian has overseen an impressive turnaround in his short time at the Chelsea helm and Kalou has praised the new attitude at the club. "I think the idea is to give an opportunity for everyone to show that they want to play for the club and give 100%," he said. "That is how you get everybody behind you and that is how you get the team to work together."
