COLE IN RACE ROW
Davenport, a striker subjected to as much criticism as Cole during his spell at Old Trafford, was said to have contributed the sharp-shooter`s departure from Nottingham Forest as a 12-year-old.
However, this claim has been vehemently denied by Davenport , who said: "There is no way I said - or would say - the words attributed to me in Andy Cole`s book. I am not a racist and never have been. I have contacted a solicitor about this and intend to take the matter futher."
Paul Stretford, the ex-Arsenal forward`s agent, has backed his client, by retorting: "Andy categorically states that at no point does he claim that Peter Davenport is racist or that the incident was racially motivated. All talk of libel proceedings I find as ridiculous and unnecessary."
"Indeed, it is obvious that Peter had not read the book but reacted to a presentation of the contents by a journalist. But Andy will stand by his account and the fact it played a major part in his decision not to stay at Forest," Stretford told The Nottingham Evening Post.
