LAVIN CHARGED WITH ASSAULT
The incident occurred at the Madejski stadium, Reading, on 8th August 1999 when, during the Robins` 2-1 defeat, the player is alleged to have deliberately kicked the ball into the crowd from point blank range. The combative right back has stated that he lashed out in frustration after a debatable refereeing decision. However Police, with support of video evidence, have charged the former Waford defender.
Lavin was sent-off following the incident, and it nearly resulted in him becoming a part of Ashton Gate folklore because manager Tony Pulis seriously contemplated sacking the free transfer signing from Millwall. If he had been dismissed it would have meant the player being sacked after only 30 minutes competitive action with the club, but the west country club`s boss decided on a hefty fine and a public dressing down.
The 25-year-old Scot has been bailed to reappear at Reading Magistrates court on 6 January 2000.
