LEEDS STARS ARRESTED

HIGHLY-PRIZED duo Lee Bowyer and Jonathon Woodgate could be in hot water after being arrested and then released on bail by the police in the wake of a serious assault outside a nightclub in Leeds` city centre last week.

The two players have been vital components of David O`Leary`s impressive title-challenging squad but they are being questioned over their alleged involvement in an attack that hospitalised a 19-year-old man with head injuries.

The un-named victim is in a stable condition in Leeds General Infirmary and former Charlton midfielder Bowyer, 22, and 19-year-old England defender Woodgate will be quizzed over the incident, which is believed to have involved several individuals.

Any action taken against the Leeds stars may hamper their prospects of being included in Kevin Keegan`s squad for the Euro 2000 Finals. Bowyer, in particular, has been outstanding of late and seemed certain to be promoted to the full party after impressing in the England Under-21s.

"At the moment we are trying to establish a motive for this assault," said a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police. "The victim suffered head injuries and is currently in hospital. We do not know how many white men were involved in the incident."

It has been claimed that the confrontation involved a group of white men and a number of Asian youths.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale released a statement late on Tuesday afternoon saying: "The Club can confirm that Lee Bowyer and Jonathon Woodgate have been questioned by the police regarding an incident that took place in Leeds city centre last week.

"Leeds United firmly believe that all players have a personal responsibility to act in a way that befits their position within the local community.

"If it is subsequently proven that this has not been the case in individual circumstances, serious internal disciplinary action will be taken."Adam Marshall
