DUO RECEIVE DEATH THREATS

LEEDS UNITED have intensified security and informed the police after receiving death threats against Jonathon Woodgate and Lee Bowyer.

The United pair were arrested and released on Police bail following an incident in Leeds city centre which resulted in 19-year-old Sarfaz Najeib being hospitalised with serious head, face and leg injuries.

"We have had a number of disturbing letters and phone calls to the club, and revenge threats have been made to the players," said an Elland Road spokesman. "We cannot afford to take any chances so we are treating the matter very seriously and have told all the players to be on their guard."

Better news for England defender Woodgate is that boot-sponsors Fila have defended him amid rumours that they were about to pull the plug on a three year deal just six months into it.

Fila backed up Woodgate in a statement saying: "During our six month relationship with Jonathon Woodgate he has proved himself to be a model professional both on and off the pitch."
