UNITED STAY ON TITLE TRAIL

TEDDY SHERINGHAM scored the game`s solitary goal as Manchester United edged Sheffield Wednesday in Wednesday night`s match at Hillsbrough putting the Champions three points clear at the top of the Premiership.

United were made to work for their win at a ground that they haven`t won at since October 1993 and this run looked like continuing until Sheringham struck 17 minutes from time.

The former England striker, currently in negotiations over a new contract at Old Trafford, did his cause no harm as he ran onto Ryan Giggs` through ball to finish past Pavel Srnicek in the Wednesday goal for his second crucial goal in three league games.

The Owls` best chance came in the first half when Niclas Alexandersson set-up Wim Jonk, only for the Dutchman to hesitate in the area before squaring to Gilles de Bilde who fired over Mark Bosnich`s goal.
