HAALAND HITS BACK

ALF INGE HAALAND has defended his controversial comments aimed at Manchester United, which he made on his official website.

The Norwegian international`s thoughts were picked up by a couple of national newspapers, in an attempt to stoke the fire ahead of the already white-hot occasion. "The papers here in England refuse to see the whole picture," slammed the Leeds man. "They take one word, and use it for what it`s worth."

The word S*** was used by the 27-year-old to describe the Premiership leaders. However, whilst admitting S*** was meant in a negative context, Haaland claimed: "I have never written the word "Scum" about Manchester United, and I do not feel that way about them either.

"On Sunday, 40,000 people called Manchester United S**t and Scum," he added. "We experience the same at Old Trafford. The feelings are strong, and that is what I wanted to explain."

Team-mate Eirik Bakke was also criticised by chairman Peter Ridsdale for describing the top-of-the-table encounter as the "hate game" of the season.
