LEEDS UNITED 4 WIMBLEDON 1

LEEDS UNITED closed the gap on Manchester United at the top of the Premiership when they secured a 4-1 victory over Wimbledon at Elland Road.

Their 3-1 interval lead was not sealed without a shaky start which allowed The Dons an early goal.

Lee Bowyer missed the game after being ruled out with knee ligament damage suffered in the Slavia Prague game, with David Hopkin coming in to replace him, while Carl Cort - heavily linked with a move to Leeds - continued up front alongside Andreas Lund for the Dons.

The home side were still trying to settle down when Jason Euell nipped in to thunder a header in off the underside of Nigel Martyn`s crossbar and silence the home crowd.

However, Leeds began to find their shape and Harry Kewell (pictured) forced Neil Sullivan to make a great save after skipping past three players.

Eirik Bakke did excellently to level matters when he burst into the area, and Leeds added a second when Ian Harte coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after Carl Cort rose at a corner and handled the ball.

Bakke added an impressive third six minutes before the interval when he beat Sullivan again from ten yards to reflect the Yorkshire side`s dominance.

Martyn was forced into action twice early in the second half to deny Euell and Robbie Earle as Leeds looked to hold on to their lead.

Kewell added a fourth late on when he beat theoffside trap and took the time to pick his spot before beating Sullivan with his last touch, as he immediately left the field to be substituted, along with fellow goalscorer Bakke, by Darren Huckerby and Matthew Jones.

The fresh legs almost paid off immediatley when Huckerby weaved into the area and pulled the ball back to Jones, who went down under a challenge but was not awarded the penalty.
