STAM: WE SHOULD BUY VAN NISTELROOY
Stam, who arrived at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven in 1998, never actually played with van Nistelrooy at the Philips Stadion as he was just arriving when Stam left, but the pair have since played in the national team together.
"Alex Fergsuon has asked me what I think about Ruud," said Stam. "He has what it takes to play for us and he would find a place in the side because we use a rotation system anyway.
"We compete on a large number of fronts and every striker gets his chance because of that.
"Ruud is quick and physically strong, he has explosive pace and is good in the air, we try to play good attacking football in every game and that would suit Ruud."
The Dutch striker is the hottest property in Europe and he is thought to be very keen on a move to the Premiership, although the £20 million price tag has put off both the early front-runners Chelsea and Arsenal.
Ferguson has also asked Bobby Robson about Nistelrooy, and he commented: "He asked me about van Nistelrooy and I told him he was good enough to play for Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or anyone."
