DERBY COUNTY 1 WEST HAM UNITED 2

TWO GOALS from former Derby star Paulo Wanchope was enough for West Ham, as they beat The Rams 2-1 at Pride Park.

The Hammers to a brilliant start when Wanchope headed home the first after just 15 minutes and the game looked over after 38 minutes when once again Wanchope scored.

The Costa Rican received the ball from a corner and he controlled the ball on his thigh before blasting the ball past Mart Poom.

Jim Smith`s men then came out for the second half with all guns blazing and the first incident of the second half saw Rory Delap commit a cynical foul on Joe Cole which saw the England Under 21 international stretched off, although is was confirmed afterwards that it was only bruising.

Derby defender Stefan Schnoor and West Ham`s former County skipper, Igor Stimac, also had to leave the field due to injury.

Despite pressure from the home side West Ham played well and held out, although Dean Sturridge did pull one back in the last minute, but that was mere consolation.

Harry Redknapp was very happy with his side`s performance and said: "We played well and I thought we passed the ball very well. We finished fifth last season and that is beyond us now, but we can still claim sixth, but anything in the top ten is good."
