TERRIFIC TOWN MAINTAIN PRESSURE ON CITY

IPSWICH kept the pressure on Manchester City with a fabulous 3-1 victory at Champions Charlton, to take the Division One automatic promotion race to the final day of the Nationwide season.

Jim Magilton fired George Burley`s side ahead after 24 minutes and then second half strikes from David Johnson and Martin Reuser sealed victory, before Andy Hunt`s consolation goal for The Addicks nine minutes from time.

The result leaves Ipswich two points behind Man City going into next week`s final programme of Division One games, when Joe Royle`s side travel to Blackburn, while Town host relegation-threatened Walsall.

With Man City having the far superior goal difference, the East Anglian outfit must hope that Graeme Souness` side can do them a favour at Ewood Park - but the scenes of celebration at Maine Road after The Citizens` 1-0 victory over Birmingham on Friday could yet prove to be premature.

Former Oxford man Magilton was influential throughout scoring one and creating the other two - and his superb free kick left Dean Kiely in the Charlton goal with no chance.

Just short of the hour mark, Town doubled their lead when Magilton lobbed a ball over the Charlton defence which former Bury striker David Johnson ran on to and coolly tucked away into The Valiants` net.

Deadline-day signing Reuser then put the result beyond doubt when he converted the Northern international`s cross from close range 19 minutes from time.

The Addicks` crowd had some consolation on the day that captain Mark Kinsella lifted the Division One trophy when Hunt headed home Robinson`s free kick nine minutes from time.

Elsewhere, the games of most importance in the division were at the foot of the table where Walsall kept their hopes of staying up alive by beating Portsmouth 1-0 courtesy of Pedro Matias` 13th minute strike.

With West Midlands rivals West Brom being held to a 1-1 draw at QPR, The Saddlers remain third-bottom but are on the same points as Albion who host Charlon on the last day of the season.

Crewe are the other side who could get relegated to Division Two, as a 3-1 home defeat to Bolton left them two points ahead of the relegation rivals.

Dario Gradi`s side, who possess the same goal difference as Walsall, could go down if the other sides both win and they fail to win.

The Gresty Road outfit fell behind to Eidur Gudjohnsen`s 15th minute strike and, despite Mark Rivers` equaliser on the half hour, Dean Holdsworth`s penalty after 71 minutes and Claus Jensen`s last minute strike gave The Trotters a crucial win that keeps their hopes of a play-off spot alive.

With Huddersfield surprisingly losing 2-0 at home to Stockport - thanks to Keith Cooper`s early strike and Craig Armstrong`s own goal - Sam Allardyce`s side now lie just four points behind The Terriers and have two games remaining, while Town just have one.

Meanwhile, Barnsley won 2-1 at already-relegated Swindoin with Matt Appelby and Mike Sheron hitting the target before James Williams` consolation strike for The Robins.

Norwich beat Sheffield United 2-1, going two ahead in the first 11 minutes through Craig Fleming and Craig Bellamy, although Paul Devlin`s penalty 12 minutes from time gave The Blades some hope.

Grimsby`s miserable run of form continued as they lost 2-1 to Tranmere at Blundell Park. Goals from Dave Challinor and Wayne Allison sandwiched a strike from Darryl Clare for the home side.

Finally, Crystal Palace secured their First Division status for next season with a come-from-behind victory at home to Blackburn. Eagles old-boy Matt Jansen put Rovers ahead after 27 minutes, before on-loan Ashley Cole equalised on the hour and Clinton Morrison struck the winner 19 minutes from time.
