MERSON GETS PEOPLES` VOTE FOR EURO 2000

IN our most hotly contested poll to date - Paul Merson emerged as the person most of you considered unlucky to miss out on the England Euro 2000 squad beating Frank Lampard by just 1%.

Merson, who has been in scintillating form for FA Cup finalists Aston Villa this year, polled 31% of the 1,360 votes cast - and many of you feel that he would bring something a little ore creative to our midfield options.

Only narrowly behind was West Ham United star Frank Lampard, who received over 400 votes after a good season for the Hammers.

Lampard has not only played a tenacious role behind the mercurial front pairing of Paolo Di Canio and Paulo Wanchope, but he has also chipped in on the scoring front - bagging 14 strikes in all competitions.

A very credible bronze medal was taken by Lampard's team-mate 'Tricky' Trevor Sinclair - who claimed the third spot with an extremely positive 19% of the total.

Teddy Sheringham may be set to stay on at Manchester United - but 8% of you think that he should also be an England player as well.

The talented forward created a deadly 'SAS' combination with Alan Shearer - and his ability in the air could play a major part in gaining him the fourth place in the poll.

Ben Thatcher would give England defensive options in the full-back role - but only 4% of you think that he should be in Kevin Keegan's squad.

Another full-back rooted at the bottom of the poll with 4% of the total was Sunderland's Michael Gray - perhaps proving that Keegan's faith in an attacking squad is supported by the English public.
