INTEREST WANING IN JUNINHO

THE interest from Portugal in the services of Brazilian midfielder Juninho is rumoured to be waning, giving Middlesbrough a boost in their bid to sign the player on a permanent basis.

Benfica spokesman Eladio Parames told the Portuguese press that there were no plans to bring either the ex-Sao Paolo star or Malaga`s Catanha to the Estadio da Luz, despite earlier hints that Jupp Heynckes had targeted the Atletico Madrid ace.

However, it is understood that the club have considered the possibility of bringing the player to the Portuguese capital, although Real Oviedo are also believed to be intent on linking the player up again with his former coach, Raddy Antic.

Juninho has admitted that he would consider a switch to Lisbon, and he is desperate to quit Atletico, following their relegation last term, and his return to the club after a loan stint on Teesside.

Porto have also revealed that they were offered the 27-year-old when trying to negotiate to sign Hugo Leal from the Spanish club.

"They wanted to negotiate for Juninho," said Porto`s Pinto da Costa. " But we did not consider that it was in the interest of FC Porto. At this moment, Hugo Leal is in our plans."
