JUVE LAND TREZEGUET

JUVENTUS have sealed their move for Monaco striker David Trezeguet for a fee in the region of £14.6 million, with the Frenchman only needing to pass a medical to wrap up his switch to Turin.

Following talks between Juve`s Roberto Bettega, agent Antonio Caliendo and Trezeguet`s father, Jorge, the transfer has been agreed, even though the 22-year-old attacker was under contract with Monaco until 2004.

Trezeguet has agreed a five year contract with his new club, after deciding that the time was right to prove his worth in Serie A. Milan and Lazio had also been on the trail of the Euro 2000 squad member.

Although behind Thierry Henry, Christophe Dugarry and Nicolas Anelka in the pecking order, he may yet have a starring role to play in the tournament, if Roger Lemerre decides to call upon his explosive talents again in the semi-final or, if the World Cup winners get through, the final itself in Rotterdam.

Henri Biancheri, the sports director of Monaco, commented: "The Italians don`t like it when it drags out. They can drop everything all at once."

However, the deal is believed to have been secured, even though Trezeguet himself responded cautiously by saying: "I haven`t signed anything. I still have to negotiate."

Monaco will look to replace their impressive striker with Rennes` Shabani Nonda, who tied up his transfer to the Principality on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Juve have had less success in their bid to sign Arsenal midfield warrior Patrick Vieira. Trezeguet`s international colleague could be staying at Highbury after the Italians` initial approaches failed to bear fruition.
