BORO REMAIN QUIET OVER GAZZA

MIDDLESBROUGH are refusing to comment over suggestions that they are set to give Paul Gascoigne a free transfer.

It has been reported that Bryan Robson has agreed to release the 33-year-old midfielder, after a series of bust-ups with the club.

The former England international was supposedly absent from a meeting with Robson, chief executive Keith Lamb and his representative Mel Stein, and this seems to have been the final straw.

Gazza has a year left on his £20,000-a-week deal, and may now consider either dropping down a division or moving abroad.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson had commented less than a month ago that Gascoigne was back in intensive training with the club, but that now seems to be in doubt.

Whether the stories are of substance or not is yet to be revealed, but the press are taking Boro`s silence as a definite yes.

Meanwhile, Boro have announced that they will play European Champions Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly.

The game will take place in La Linear, near Gibraltar, on August 13th and another fixture against a Spanish La Liga side on August 11th will be announced shortly.
