GAZZA IN SHOCK EVERTON MOVE?
Toffees boss Walter Smith, who has already been active in the summer transfer market with the signings of Alex Nyarko, Steve Watson and Alessandro Pistone, is being connected with a shock free transfer swoop for the former England man.
Gascoigne’s future has been in doubt since he broke his arm against Aston Villa towards the end of last term, and he has been linked with moves all over the world – including Australia, Norway and Scotland.
But it could be with his former mentor that he finds his top-flight career given one final chance. The 33-year-old played under Smith at Rangers, where he produced some of his best football, and holds him in high esteem.
It had been reported earlier in the month that Boro were set to give Gascoigne a free transfer after he failed to show up for a crisis meeting and this link would appear to confirm that.
Although Smith still has great faith in Gascoigne’s undoubted ability, he would almost certainly install a get-out clause to guard against any off-field dramas.
If Gascoigne were to stay at the Riverside, he would find his opportunities extremely limited due to Bryan Robson bringing in Christian Karembeu and Paul Okon to bolster his midfield, and he may see a move to Merseyside as the perfect opportunity to resurrect his Premiership career.
