GAZZA WILL STAY ON THE RAILS - STEIN
Stein confirmed that Gascoigne was on his way to Goodison Park subject to agreeing personal terms and successfully completing a medical.
According to Stein, it is the respect which the 33-year-old has for Smith which will be the key to keeping the former Tottenham man on the straight and narrow.
"Paul is on his way to Everton subject to us agreeing terms and passing a medical," Stein told Sportonair.
"It is like a father and son relationship. He is scared of Walter and that is a good thing, Paul will not go off the rails as long as Walter is in charge."
Stein continued by heaping praise on Middlesbrough, saying: "Boro have been terrific and Paul is extremely grateful to them. They have behaved well in an era when clubs generally behave so badly."
Stein also claimed that Gascoigne is well on course for the start of the season, adding: "Contrary to reports, Paul is looking extremely good in training."
